Placing older students with younger students is still a big concern. If I had a child in a facility this would worry me deeply and it should worry the parties that be who want to put them together. Another question that hasn't been answered either is what is the price tag on converting New Visions (if possible)to a male center for Taft's most violent offenders? Taxpayers will be paying for it.

It appears that the students as well as the lowest recidivism rate of 3 percent are not important. Counselors, teachers, security, community are not important. Questions regarding the budget, capacity, reassignments, are not being answered. Responses are “I don’t have that in front of me”, “I’ll check into it”, “I will get back with you”, “I don’t know”. Responses to the facility are totally incorrect and have been asked repeatedly. PRIVATIZATION must be the plan because it certainly isn’t the students or personnel at Taft. Hats off and support to the bipartisan group that has stepped up and continues to question this matter. And a big thank you to you Mr. Cook for your article and calling it for what is obviously is…….about the dollar.

I find it hard to believe that a graduation was canceled due to parents not being notified nor do I believe it to be a "distance" issue. Have graduations not been held at Taft in the past with no problems? This is not fair to the students who have worked hard to have a ceremony.

There was another shooting in Chattanooga Friday night. A 14 year old boy entered Parkridge hospital with a gunshot wound to his shoulder. He said he was walking down the street when the incident occured. He stated someone came out from behind some bushes and shot him. Story was published Dec. 31st. Another sad event. Another reason I believe crime is not down and that Taft shouldn't be closed. Police are investigating, but I can't help believe it is gang related.

I just read that the shooting in Chattanooga is believed to be gang related and that an officer was shot along with nine other people, one being 17. If you haven't read this story you may want to. After you read it think about where the shooters will be going? Close Taft?? Bad idea. Come to your own conclusion after reading this. It isn't just in Chattanooga, it is in other areas of the state.

I dare to differ....there is a line between dependent neglect/foster kids and Juvenile Justice Kids. Closing a maximum security to house teenagers such as these would be a bad idea. I would not want to foster these junenile in my home, nor would most of the population. Our Governor and the parties that be should look into this matter before closing a Taft. A felony charge is a felony charge........one can't imagine the harm that could be if placed in a residential setting.

annie53 said... Was the shooting in Chattanooga at the teen party gang related or has the investigation revealed any other information. If the shooters were teens they will not be going to an adult facility. I don't think foster care, group homes or any facility other than Taft could house offenders such as these. Talk to your representatives, vote no on the closing of Taft. The next shooting could be your teen..........

I have read your post "justsayin94" and the cold hard facts is that if Taft is closed, other institutions will have to deal with the students and I feel it will result in injury to staff or weaker students. They will be no Taft to send them to. I think I would be safe in saying that most of the population at Taft has been in group homes and foster homes and both programs failed. At least at Taft they have programs that could give these students a chance.

I just read about the shooting at a teen club in Chattanooga with nine people injuried, one of which being a 17 year old. If the shooters were teenagers where will they be when the investigation is over? They are not old enough for an adult facility, and I am sure a group home, foster home, or any facility would not be a good placement for them. Taft Youth Center should not be closed. This is where offenders such as these are placed. Please contact your representatives..........it could be your teen at a party.
