MS. McIntosh: What you have written here is a good example of poor thinking,a lack of knowledge and an incomplete education. (1) Begin with a faulty premise and you will reach an erroneous conclusion. Experience, particularly among teachers, may mean they have spent 19 years repeating the first year's mistakes...that is exactly why the trend is AWAY from tenure. Who are you to say what an "effective" teacher is? To define effective teaching so that it can be measured is something no one has been able to do. You cannot do it with your anecdotal (personal experience) evidence, always the lowest form of research. "WE" don't have to do anything to get over the problems of the poor. The poor will always be poor if they just wait for others to make them wealthy, healthy and wise. It is very simple and has been around for a long time, go to church, work, get an education. Guaranteed to stop the whining.

Congratulations to all of your prize winning journalists! Bennett and Cook really should be given awards for the abuse they take from some of the more maniacal kibitzers...

PLEASE CEASE AND DESIST! Who gives you your marching orders? Do you do any analysis at all before you bless us with your opinions? IF "COOTIE," is such an eloquent spokesman and so ready to debate, why was he not a debater during the years he spent in high school and at UT? Why is there absolutely nothing listed under "ACHIEVEMENTS" for him in the special section of Sunday's TFP? Did he do absolutely nothing in high school OR college? There are ample opportunities to lead and achieve in booth venues, and those that can, DO! I think he is a phony and a member of a loser generation. He has only consistently demonstrated sneaky, back-stabbing stuff like secretly taping other politicians. No way would I vote for him to represent me. I know I can depend on Chuck. I think we'd probably end up furnishing "depends" for Cootie.

Apparently, "Cootie," is a pet project for the TFP,doing everything it can to get this boy elected to an office he is not ready for. Better to throw him back in and let him mature a while. There IS a difference between age and maturity.

Timbo and Conservative; you are nailing it! The problem is multicausitive, deep seated and long standing. The solution is not readily available. I don't think duds like ki and inquiring mind have any substance to offer to the solution.

inquiring mind: I have no doubt a monkey could use a typewriter to enhance your drivel. Do you have dyslexia? The fact is, most "good kids" do not "fall by the wayside," they succeed. Once again, if you can define GOOD TEACHING, please do so. To measure it you must first define it. This is your opportunity to shine, since no one else has been able to come up with a definition that will work

Ki: Your rapacity to shower us with anecdotal evidence rather than facts so readily available on this topic demonstrates your unworthiness to participate in this conversation. Your attempt to enter a battle of wits while being completely unarmed shows your utter lack of insight. Tennessee has ranked near the bottom in education since those rankings began. The problem is simple - stupid people and no money spent on education, because football is so much more important.

Ki: Rereading needs to be as important to you as remembering, since you can not recall what you wrote on this page. You wrote,"Unfortunately, like many other towns and cities Chattanooga's solution to the poverty problem has been to round up its poor and dump em (sic)in parts unknown..." Remember now? It is not true, but it sounds like a good plan. In fact, I'll drive the truck if you are on it. I didn't say it was your fault,I said I was blaming you.

Ki and timbo, you are not giving us history, it is just "urstory!" You throw around the underclass party line like it is all fact, and it is just junk. Any person ready and willing to learn will get an education in spite of "bad" teachers, poverty, terrible cultural conditions, and no parents at all. No one can even define "good teaching," so how can it be measured? Apparently, since teaching and schools began there has been a conspiracy to "dumb down" certain groups, and it happened everywhere in the world except for the country of origin for that group, all those in the group are well taught, highly educated, wealthy and wise, and every one has at least two loving parents, some have an entire village! They are also non-violent and community spirited and we all dream about moving there to live. Do I have your theories correct now?
