My name is Karen and I have always had a great love for God's creatures from the time I was old enough to put my hand out and touch one. My home is filled to the brim with 5 bassets, a husky and two kitties. Collectively they are know as The Dog House Gang with The Kitty Korner.

I also the first person my neighbors calls when one of their pets is injured or ill. Though I am not a vet I find my nursing skills come in very handy to stabilize pet injuries. Everyone knows that I have a pantry dedicated to just the furkidz and always have every type of first aid items, you could every need.

I am a volunteer and foster mom, for a Golden Gate Basset Rescue but also help with fundraisers and will occasionally help with transport or help out at a booth during local events.

I absolutely adore the senior hounds! My 12 yr. old Nelly Belle is a joy but her socialization skills, fears and anxieties are almost a thing of the past. We made progress today as she actually went up to my 8 yr old granddaughter and asked to be petted. While that not seem like a big deal to most this is a major breakthrough for her. Two years ago I could not even touch her, she was scared of everything! A simple little clink of ice cubes would send her running in terror, searching for a place to hide. She has gone from a puppy mill producer to a happy, loved and very loving senior gal.

My latest foster, Fabulous Freddie, who arrived on New Year's Eve has a sad history, as many rescues do. The saddest part is that 2 weeks after his arrival, he was diagnosed with Oral Malignant Melanoma. He came through surgery with flying colors and so far there is no sign of any masses. Like all my foster bassets before him he has a very special place in my heart. Now we are just waiting for the day he "wows" that special someone and finally moves into his Furever Home.

Animal Welfare (not rights) is a passion of mine. No animal should be disposable! They should never be dumped, abused or neglected. I believe that when you bring a pet into your home they are there for their lifetime. Some of the most inexcusable excuse I have heard are: "They are to old. The kids don't take care of him/her. I don't have time" Blah blah blah blah...
