If voting was easier, winners would change
I read the recent letter from a fellow newcomer to Soddy-Daisy with a lot of nodding and one big disagreement.
Like him, I moved here about a year ago, in my case from California. Like him, I found that voting here takes detective work. Where he sees lazy campaigns, though, I see a system that works exactly as it was designed to.
In California, about a month before every election, a voter guide arrived in my mailbox. It had statements from the candidates and plain-English explanations of every ballot measure. Then my ballot came in the mail, and a text told me it was on its way. I filled it out, mailed it back, and a few days later got another text confirming it had been received and counted. Voting was easy, and turnout showed it.
Tennessee made different choices. You can’t vote by mail here unless you fit one of the state’s approved excuses. You must show a state or federal photo ID at the polls. No guide arrives at your door. These aren’t accidents or oversights. They were decisions made in Nashville, and the effect is fewer voters, especially new ones.
