Southern Steer, a small franchise chain of independently owned neighborhood butcher shops, has opened a North Chattanooga location.
The shop is the 21st location of Southern Steer, which was founded in 2013 in Clearwater, Florida, according to the chain’s website.
Owner Kevin Gillespie said he has a passion for meat and cooking, and he aims to provide an old-school butcher shop experience by offering high quality, custom-cut meats and locally sourced products.
He recalls going to the butcher shop with his Polish grandmother, who wanted her Polish sausages made a certain way.
“She would go there once a month and get it and put it in the freezer, but she would get things how she wanted it,” Gillespie said. “That’s what we wanted to bring back to the community.”
