First Things First: Are you protecting yourself or pushing people away?

Have you ever been in a disagreement with someone and wondered how two people could experience the exact same conversation so differently?

One person raises their voice. The other shuts down. One desperately wants to talk things through, while the other would rather disappear until the whole thing blows over.

And somehow, both walk away feeling misunderstood, hurt or even unsafe.

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about our natural defense mechanisms. Those almost instinctive reactions we have when we feel criticized, rejected, threatened or misunderstood. Not necessarily when we’re in actual danger, but when something in a conversation makes us feel like we are.

What’s fascinating is that these responses often have less to do with the person standing in front of us and more to do with what we’ve learned about protecting ourselves throughout our lives.
