McCallie came up short yet again Friday night, this time to Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville.

MBA quarterback Charlier Verner threw for 179 yards and rushed for 139, accounting for all four touchdowns in a 31-28 outlasting of the Blue Tornado. McCallie suffered its sixth consecutive defeat following a 3-0 start and is now 0-4 in TSSAA Division II-AAA East Region competition.

That 0-4 mark could easily be 3-1 given that the Blue Tornado lost 28-25 to Ensworth and 20-14 to Knoxville Catholic before their latest heartbreaker.

MBA led 24-21 midway through the fourth quarter when the Blue Tornado forced a third-and-11, but Verner threw a 28-yard touchdown pass to Carter Kilburg to make it 31-21. That put McCallie in catch-up mode, but the Blue Tornado responded with a possession that culminated with Ben Ironi’s 1-yard touchdown run.
