Readers Write: Every voice deserves to be heard

About 3 million people in the United States stutter. With the passing of International Stuttering Awareness Day on Oct. 22, I hope we will give each of them something simple: the time to finish what they want to say.

A teacher can wait for a student to answer. A friend can resist supplying a word. A parent can turn to reliable information instead of old myths. These small acts tell people who stutter that their words matter.

My father, Malcolm Fraser, founded the Stuttering Foundation in 1947 because he knew how hard it was to find trustworthy help. As we approach our 80th anniversary next year, we are sharing more stories and free resources at StutteringHelp.org.

Every voice deserves to be heard.
