Party of Lincoln

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

And what would the party of Grover Cleveland think of the deficits of our current and previous Presidents? Even Harry Truman managed to cut federal spending by about half in his first couple years at the end of WWII. Even Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich balanced the budget (sort of; partly with Social Security surpluses.) Even candidate Obama said he would cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term.

Making bad deficits worse is a real problem. The cartoon does not point to any real problem, and despises those with some desire to solve the deficit problem. Wrongheaded nastiness, as usual, from our compassionate genius liberals.

(For a LOL cartoon, hunt up Henry Payne's Wright brothers airplane cartoon. Note that the government spent $70,000 on Langley's plane that couldn't fly; the Wright brothers, sons of a bishop, spent $1000 of their own money and invented one that could.)

Abe isn't the only one who would not recognize the Party of Lincoln. Neither would Barry Goldwater but he predicted its future in 1994.

Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them. -Barry Goldwater

Gee, Harry Truman cut spending after WW2. Damn, however did he manage that? Oh noes! He cut the military budget! My word, he endangered the country!

But do go ahead with your own duplicitous nastiness while hypocritically condemning others in the same breath. The Tea Party has done its best to co-opt the party of Lincoln for their agenda, and they're nothing new in this country either. You can bet they wouldn't even stand up for the principles Lincoln did. Their arguments are actually coming from the opposite direction.

Note how you are trying to blame liberals instead of taking your own responsibilities. Yes, we know, the conservative right-wing wants to make out liberals to be the bullies for daring to criticize them, as if they never said anything untoward.

You know, except continual cries for Obama's birth certificates, mendacious lies about lawsuits to take away military votes and the size of the Navy, or accusations that various Muslims are engaged in a secret conspiracy to destroy the country.

But that doesn't count, because IOKIYAR.

Neither party is advocating responsible constitutional fiscal or social behavior. Both parties support a larger central government and unfair tax rates based on current tax codes and other revenue sources. Both parties are following the path of the rise and fall of every dynasty in history. Each of the most powerful dynasties in history had a life span of approximately 200 years and fell when more than half the people became dependent on the government and more than 80% of the wealth was held by less than 20% of the people. Current conditions of the nation and rhetoric and behavior of the governments and the people is frighteningly similar to that of those failed dynasties in history.

"However, you hate what you don't understand or doesn't meet your narrow definition of 'truth"

Yes, I try to have a narrow definition of truth in accordance with my Lord Jesus Christ. You must understand that Jesus is narrow minded :

13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few. Mathew 7:13-14

Notice the "narrow" mindness of Jesus, notice the word "narrow." Notice the wide gate that leads to destruction. Notice the "few" who receive life (eternal life).

Those who redefine Christianity to include sexual immorality and the homosexual lifestyle specifically have entered the "wide" gate that leads to "destruction." Homosexuality is an abominable sin in the eyes of God and those who practice it will not inherit the kingdom of God.

Now, notice this clearly worded passage from 1 Corinthians that "narrows" down those who will not inherit the kingdom of God. This would include any of your friends who practice the sins listed, specifically homosexuality :

9 Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men who practice homosexuality, 10 nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 ESV.

Now focus on the words "unrighteous" and "will not inherit the kingdom of God", and "nor men who practice homosexuality."

This is the truth form God and I accept this "narrow" truth and proclaim this truth to you.

Abraham Lincoln Quotes

"That some achieve great success, is proof to all that others can achieve it as well." Democrats continue to whine about the wealth of others

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves." Hussein Obama is destroying this great country

"We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution." Hussein Obama continues to pervert the Constitution

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money-power of the country will endeavor to prolong it's reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed." HusseinObama's plan of redistribution of wealth by putting it in a few hands of his friends and corrupt followers will destroy the republic.

"In all that people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere. Hussein Obama and the rest of the liberals nee to pay attention to this

"You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could do for themselves." Pay attention liberals.

"You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we’ve set."

"We’ve got to have a civilian national security force that’s just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded. We need to use technology to connect people to service. We’ll expand USA Freedom Corps to create online networks where American can browse opportunities to volunteer. You’ll be able to search by category, time commitment and skill sets. You’ll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities."

Joneses, you need to check the source of your Lincoln quotes. Only one of them is correct.

"America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves."

Abraham Lincoln never uttered those two sentences.

The closest the man came to saying anything like the above is:

"All the armies of Europe, Asia and Africa combined, with all the treasure of the earth in their military chest; with a Buonaparte for a commander, could not by force, take a drink from the Ohio, or make a track on the Blue Ridge, in a trial of a thousand years. At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide."

(from "The Perpetuation of Our Political Institutions: Address Before the Young Men's Lyceum of Springfield, Illinois" January 27, 1838)

"We the people are the rightful masters of both Congress and the courts, not to overthrow the Constitution but to overthrow the men who pervert the Constitution."

This one is indeed a valid quote.

"I see in the near future a crisis approaching that unnerves me and causes me to tremble for the safety of my country. Corporations have been enthroned, an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money-power of the country will endeavor to prolong it's reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until the wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."

You've been duped by a quote that Al Gore mistakenly included in one of his books. It was debunked as being totally false.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/06/08/AR2007060802470.html

"In all that people can individually do as well for themselves, government ought not to interfere."

This one was taken completely out of context. The EXACT quote was;

"The legitimate object of Government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done, but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities. But in all that people can individually do as well for themselves, Government ought not to interfere."

"You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could do for themselves." "You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong. You cannot help the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer. You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich. You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

Actually a statement by William J. H. Boetcker known as "The Ten Cannots" (1916), this has often been misattributed to Lincoln since 1942 when a leaflet containing quotes by both men was published.

The race might end up being a lot closer because of the voter ID laws that will actually suppress and disenfranchise voters. But, hopefully, some of those laws will be overturned or blocked.

"The military overwhelming opposes petty dictators and because of that they are not supporting Obama."

Erroneous. The actual reason is the fact that there are more registered Republicans serving in the military.

“Exactly a century ago, the United States was a highly charged magnet for immigrants around the world. Thousands entered Ellis Island each day on the hope of making a better life for themselves and their families. Two of those immigrants were Jeno and Sara Friedman; they would become the parents of Milton Friedman, one of the most influential and important economists of the 20th century.

Dubbed the “grandmaster of free market economic theory” by The New York Times, Friedman’s writings, especially his 1980 book “Free to Choose,” authored with his wife Rose, refuted popular claims that “more government” would improve the quality of our lives. Milton Friedman was the most ardent spokesperson advocating the complete opposite. Voluntary choices of individuals rather than arbitrary dictates of the state, he argued, should be the default mode of human life. Anyone who thinks that 100% of our tax burden can be met by squeezing blood from turnips of people who are barely getting by, while the rich pay a smaller percentage of their income in the form of taxes, isn't of right mind.

This entire snowball of debt began with Ronald Reagan, when he dismantled the tax rate system that had been in effect for four decades and began spoiling the rich. Now that many of them are paying an effective rate of 13% or less in many cases, due to further cuts in the tax rates for top income earners, the mere thought of raising their income tax rates sends some people into a frothy spitting frenzy.

I'm like most people, in that I find taxing income to be the most regressive form of taxation out there, but it is the system currently being used, in large part, to fund the expenses of our Gov't.

I'm a realist. We have a debt problem. We have a budget control problem. Neither one of which, will ever be solved or addressed in the slightest without more revenue flowing into the Gov't, combined with sensible, humane, and non-essential spending reductions.

Everyone wants to see these two issues fixed, but nobody seems to be willing to cough up more in the form of taxes, especially among those who can absolutely afford to do so without it resulting in the sacrificing of a very comfortable lifestyle.

I'm sorry, but the thought of the rich sitting and stacking their dollars into nice little neat piles, lamenting that everyone needs to pay as much in taxes as they do, while the lower middle class and the poor are raking and scraping their quarters to pay their bills every month, is simply ludicrous.

The rich feel that they are doing their part and pay enough. Thus, the class warfare goes on.

The only tried and true way to resolve this class warfare issue once and for all, is to transform our system of taxation from one that penalizes success into one that taxes what one spends.

That way everyone gets to keep all of what they earn, and everyone is taxed according to what they can truly afford to spend.

One rate for all. But that would be too simple, wouldn't it?

Looking at today's Republican Party, he certainly forecast the extremism part accurately and it has nothing to do with defending liberty. You need to read his book "Conscience of a Conservative" to see how really far from Goldwater the party has swung. Yet the rich liberals like Warren Buffet will talk the talk but not walk the walk and write a check to the IRS. Same for the Hollywood liberals who jump on class warfare and will not offer to pay more or Leonardo DiCRAPIO who benefited from the $7,500 tax credit on the Fisker electric car he purchased, which the middle class will have to pay for.

How about the rich liberal politicans in Washington like Fienstien, Pelosi, Kerry , Rockefeller, Lautenburg for example who I'm sure are only paying taxes on their salary as a U.S. Senator but each are worth millions if not hunderd of millions.

Funny how the liberals always yell for higher taxes but will never give any more then they are required to give if they even pay their taxes at all (Timmy Geithner, Tommy Daschle, Chucky Rangle, Kerry docking his yacht in Rhode Island so as not to pay state tax in Ma.) But they want everyone else to pay their fair share.

You can't think in terms outside of Republican and Democrat. When a liberal says, "The rich should pay their fair share.", you take that to mean rich Republicans. That is simply not the case.

Of course it includes me. It includes you as well and all of mankind. Did you really think that I didn't know that. I don't know your purpose for addressing me with that but I welcome the opportunity to expand. I will even provide the words of Romans 3:10 - " As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one."

However, the righteousness of God has been imputed to me. "to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

6 Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

7 Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.

8 Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin." Romans 4: 5-8.

By accepting Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior, I have been justified in the sight of God, my sins are not imputed to me and his righteousness has been imputed to me instead. Very important also is that God's righteousness is imputed to me apart from works, v6.

No one, according to Scripture will go to heaven by doing good works. Salvation can not be gained by doing good works- "he saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to his own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit" Titus 3:5

Praise God!!!

Tax credits are there for everyone who qualifies for them. I have no idea how you calculate that a tax credit will be paid for by anyone who falls into the middle class.

"How about the rich liberal politicans in Washington like Fienstien, Pelosi, Kerry , Rockefeller, Lautenburg for example who I'm sure are only paying taxes on their salary as a U.S. Senator but each are worth millions if not hunderd of millions."

And I'm sure that each of them or their spouses paid their one time assessed income taxes on what they now sit on, as it was earned.

But they want everyone else to pay their fair share."

John Kerry is perfectly within his rights in parking his yacht in Rhode Island. No state that I am aware of has any law on the books that requires people to park all of their property within the borders of the state in which they reside. Avoiding property taxes, if that is indeed what he is doing by parking it in another state, is not the same as avoiding income taxes.

Tax cheats or avoiders come in all shapes, sizes, and they align themselves with both political parties. Nobody has ever claimed that every Liberal does not cheat when it comes to paying taxes.

"Al, since you are the defended of the truth why don't you mention how your liberal friends are the biggest hypocrites when it comes to paying taxes."

None of the people you mention know my name. They are hardly my "friends." Hypocrisy exists on both sides of the aisle.

I'm more concerned by all of those who stand on the right side, feigning false outrage over the national debt and deficit spending, while at the same time claiming that the tab for each or both should be someone else's responsibility.

After all, don't we hear and read all the time, this crap about how all of this spending and debt is going to be saddled on the backs of their Grandchildren?

Clearly, these same people have no interest or intention in dealing with the issue within their lifetime, especially if it means that it will cost them one more cent out of their own pockets.

They are just as eager to pass it on to future generations as those they accuse of doing the same.

I know it's in many people's nature to feed a stray animal that looks like it is starving, but feeding an internet troll only encourages them to hang around.

A troll is not hard to spot. Their only motivation and level of participation is to offer unwarranted and unsolicited commentary along with personal insults toward any or all participants.

Be strong. Be vigilant. Don't give them what they crave. Shut the door in their face and they will seek attention elsewhere.

Along with the obvious trolls, there are a couple of people who are more than content to express ignorance in almost every post they offer.

Refuting misinformation with the facts and moving on is the best course of action. Correcting ignorance respectfully is about all anyone can do to enlighten those who sit in front of a computer screen -- who love nothing more than to annoint themselves with ignorance like a child does with water in a wading pool.

Opinions, presented as such, are not something worthy of getting one's boxers in a bunch. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, even if they are off the charts. Arguing with such people in any attempt to change their opinion(s) rarely if ever winds up being productive.

If someone resorts to insulting an opponent in situations of debate, any point they may be attempting to make is lost forever. The insult is all people will remember.

One cannot repeatedly offer intentional or ignorant offerings of misinformation, when confronted and exposed for doing so routinely, and have any expectations that people will ever consider them to have an ounce of credibility.

Only the absolute and provable truth will stand when the world is on fire.

There's nothing political being implied in my statement. When people present something of a factual nature, it is either true or it isn't.

"Liberalism has never worked in any arena."

That's very debatable, but I'll save it for another day.

"Your idea of what "rich" people do with their money is funny and cartoonish."

It was a metaphorical presentation. Your criticism of it in literal terms lends me to believe that you are not a very deep thinker.

"Another question. Do poor people on your planet create the jobs?"

I know of many people who were poor when they took the plunge into business. This country was built by many such people.

"We all can't be "rich"."

Perhaps, but then there is little evidence over the past ten years that giving tax breaks to the rich, has enriched the pockets of anyone other than the rich, and that very few jobs have been created as a result of those tax breaks.

"All people equal denotes that we would all be poor. Would you like that? Government housing and food stamps for all!! What a liberal Utopia that would be!!"

You threw that ill conceived notion out one time before and I trounced it. If every cent of wealth were equally divided among every man, woman and child in this country, we would all have around $120,000 apiece.

None of us would be rich, but most people would do very well with a head start of liquid capital in that amount, and very few people would consider themselves to be poor.

Ooops!!! The democrats elected a Libertarian to run against Corker this November? That is absolutely hilarious. The democrat party in TN is so screwed up that they cannot field a candidate with enough name recognition to beat the guy that gets his name listed first in order on the ballot.

http://www.tennessean.com/article/20120803/NEWS02/308030124/1972?gcheck=1&nclick_check=1

I must learn more about Mark Clayton. Maybe there will be someone worth voting for in November after all!

Note: Even though they cannot field a candidate worth noting I am sure they all know how to properly spell "Carl Marx"!

So, it appears that standing up against gay & lesbian advocacy in the classroom is a bad thing in the eyes of democrats.

Conservative Mark Clayton defeats democrat Richard Montgomery in the democrat primary for Corkers seat, after battling with Montgomery to keep homosexual promotion out of the public classroom! Maybe Clayton’s win has more to do with establishment democrat’s obsession with gay activism than the order of names on a ballot.

Wrong again alpo. First of all, people would need to spend that money on things. Let's say food. So the food producers would then have more than the people buying the food. Sooner or later, everybody's $120,000 would gravitate to the people who actually sell products. These people eventually would invest their legally gained income and expand their businesses to sell more products to more people willing to purchase them.

According to the "spread the wealth" advocates such as yourself, these producers would have to give their income back to the people who bought their products in the first place. In other words, giving away their products for free.

Hence, NOBODY prospers in your liberal "equal" utopia. Your belief of zero sum economics is bizarre if not fascinating. You talk a lot about the "rich" paying their "fair share", but now you must give specific numbers about what your idea of their "fair share" should be.

“Bankruptcy makes for strange bedfellows. During its brief spell on the national stage, the Occupy Wall Street movement raged against rich corporations—‘corporate fascists’ in OWS parlance. Look, I'm not an advocate for dividing up everybody's wealth equally. So there's little need to argue about it.

All I'm saying is that if most people had $120,000 in the bank, not many of them would feel as if they were poor, at least while they still have it.

"According to the "spread the wealth" advocates such as yourself, these producers would have to give their income back to the people who bought their products in the first place."

I'm not Socialist to any point near advocating total wealth distribution. I'm in business myself to make a profit. What I do advocate is that is it absolutely necessary for people who work for a living to earn a living wage, and that we need to move a little more to the center in terms of wealth distribution.

A strong middle class has always allowed this nation to prosper. When the vast majority of the wealth is concentrated in too few pockets, the flow of money slows to a crawl.

"Hence, NOBODY prospers in your liberal "equal" utopia. Your belief of zero sum economics is bizarre if not fascinating."

You're vastly overstating what I wrote and you are interpreting it far differently than I presented it. You made the statement, all of your own volition, that if all the wealth were divided, that everyone would be poor, and that is simply not the case.

"You talk a lot about the "rich" paying their "fair share", but now you must give specific numbers about what your idea of their "fair share" should be."

I do not have to provide you a thing, simply because you demand it.

Secondly, I have not harped on the "rich" not paying their fair share very much at all. Go back and read what I wrote. I get very irked at people who bitch and moan about the debt and deficit spending, while at the same time, make it clear as a bell that they resent paying another cent in taxes to begin to address the problem.

Where do these people think the money is going to come from? Anybody and everybody who can pay taxes, should do so.

Now...you want me to go on record with specifics. Fine. I think the tax rates need to go up to about where they were before Ronald Reagan dismantled them, without eliminating the 15% tax bracket near the bottom.

A top tax rate of 50% on all income above $500,000 per year would be a great start. Income between $100,000 and $500,000 should be taxed at around 38%. Tax rates on all investment income needs to go right back up to match the tax rates of all other income, with an exemption from any income tax...period, for income that is used to fund retirement plans. Of course, there would have to be a cap in place as to how much one could invest in a retirement plan per year.

Jack_Dennis: Ah, the false protests continue. Keep pretending to be aggrieved.

TOES02800: no more than I want to see anybody else dead, which is not at all. I'd rather all such tragedies be stopped, regardless of what religion you associate with them, and I don't feel killing people would do much to foster that change. It'd just stir up more anger and resentment, leading to more killing, and more sorrow.

But actually, stealing food is one of the things that isn't harshly punished in traditional Islamic areas. Unlike here, where you can be sent to prison for years for stealing a candy bar.

Still, your biggest problem is trying to pretend that the number of victims is meaningful. If you want to play that game, you have to look into the tens of thousands, even hundreds of thousands, of innocent civilians killed in Muslim countries at the results of US action. That's not a calculation you really want to bring up.

Well, actually, some of the right-wingers pretend to care now, but since they're only doing it because it's Obama in office, we can dismiss that.

jesse, only if we were all fools who decided to just stop in a blind panic.

Of course, it's not like all of the nation's wealth can be converted into direct currency anyway. If that happened, well, it'd be a very strange world where I suppose our economy would be non-existent.

But assets-wise, it'd probably stimulate a lot more economic activity than you can imagine if more people had assets to use for their own benefit rather than some few concentrating it all. See the thing a lot of people don't understand about communism or socialism is that it doesn't require you to be equal to everybody else, but that mechanisms of exploiting others are deterred.

You can still profit, you just can't rob others to do it.

Hussein Obama's Alinsky's rules include:

  • "Wherever possible go outside the experience of the enemy. Here you want to cause confusion, fear and retreat."

  • "Make the enemy live up to his/her own book of rules. You can kill them with this. They can no more obey their own rules than the Christian church can live up to Christianity." So conservative Republicans who “cling to their guns and religion” are castigated when they don’t always live up to their Christian ideals, while liberal Democrats who have no ideals to live up to get a free pass. Just one example of the hypocrisy of the left - Barney Frank was caught allowing a male brothel to operate out of his condominium - Democrats joked about it and he is still in the House of Representatives! On the other hand, a Republican senator who plead guilty to a misdemeanor for allegedly having “signaled” another male in a public bathroom stall chose not to run again. The double standard is palpable for anyone with the eyes to see - there are strict rules of conduct for every Republican or conservative in office, and virtually no rules for Democrats and liberals.

  • "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon. It is almost impossible to counterattack ridicule. Also, it infuriates the opposition, who then react to your advantage." You might notice that our president, with all the authority of the office of the President of the United States, still finds it necessary to constantly ridicule his “enemies”, claiming to be "amused" by the Tea Parties and saying they should be thanking him! (And all along I thought we were all Americans, with the right to assemble and to peacefully protest the policies of our government!)

Prior to Reagan's tax reductions, taxpayers could deduct just about any type of interest they had to include auto loans, credit cards, etc, etc. in addition to home mortages. When libs say we should raise rates back to where they were pre Reagan, they evidently don't know the difference between a tax rate and an effective tax rate.

I've held an accounting license for many years, so trust me when I say that I know the difference between a tax rate and an effective tax rate.

Tax rates in no manner reflect the effective tax rates for anyone, as there are always deductions that apply to every tax return filed.

But as a starting point, the tax rates need to be raised on high income earners to those levels I mentioned last night. What the IRS does in regard to allowable deductions from those tax rates will be up to them.
