'Pipe-smoking story totally senseless' and other letters to the editors

Pipe-smoking story totally senseless

Your recent Life section cover story documented the rise in popularity of pipe smoking, complete with photos of a young woman "enjoying" lighting up and explaining how "appealing" it is to clean, pack and light a pipe. A sidebar covered how choosing your pipe tobacco is a "personal choice" like deciding on a coffee. It describes some varieties as having a flavor like "sweet oatmeal or caramel."

My images are different. Like watching my 49-year-old Dad die from nasopharyngeal cancer after being a pipe smoker. Or my friend's grandfather, who was never seen without his pipe until he had to have most of his lower jaw removed.

Shame on you for printing this senseless article!

Demand action to halt violence

As a citizen of Tennessee, I am writing my senators and congressman and demand that action be taken to prevent any more tragedies like the recent school killings. I implore all Americans to write or call our government representatives: Sen. Lamar Alexander, 455 Dirksen Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510, 202-224-4944; Sen. Bob Corker, 185 Dirksen Senate Office Building, Washington, DC 20510, 202- 224-3344; and Rep. Chuck Fleischmann, 511 Cannon House Office Building, Washington, DC 20515, 202- 225-3494, local 423-756-2342.

Agencies make payments difficult

I was a programmer during the '70s, '80s and '90s. This statement was the one I heard the most often that sent chills down my spine.

I set my bank account up to pay my property tax via EFT. On Thursday, I got a receipt from both the city of Chattanooga and Hamilton County. But one of the agencies had a history of two payments, and the other had lost a check, which was mailed, from the bank, on time.

Neither agency accepts EFT payments. "Snail Mail all the way!"

So they say "we have to raise taxes again." But they also have people making mistakes doing jobs which can be done completely hands-free. Receive the EFT, post the account and email my receipt. This is not rocket science.

Companies (which have to show a profit) do it every month. And yet I was advised by the bank that it was safer to "snail mail" a check to the government. Business licenses are done much the same.

Fill out a form and mail in a check.

My question: Why, why, why?

'Demand action to halt violence'

Regarding gun control, please consider this:

History/Experience has shown that when evil, deranged individuals

decide to commit mass murder...they will find a way. I recently

heard a comment (paraphrase): "Take away their guns, and, they will

create a many-times more grotesque/bizzare scene with their butcher knives."

December 18, 2012 at 12:39 a.m.

Not really, ORRMEANSLIGHT, besides, the real issue of gun violence is not the singular individuals, no matter how much media attention they get while the far more common problems are ignored.

STEVEN SMITH, actually, there's a simple legal reason for it. No organized system of responsibility and if there's one thing we've demanded from our government, it's accountability.

And the idea of a government-run payment system ran into opposition from the financial industry who hated the thought of losing their opportunity to skim profits.

OML, I would like for you to describe how a person armed with butcher knives could even come close to the severity and magnitude of death and destruction that someone can do who is armed with a repeating automatic or semi-automatic weapon. Are there automatic and semi-automatic butcher knives that I don't know about? Actually, you say that they would create not just a comparable scene of destruction but "a many-times more grotesque/bizzare scene with their butcher knives." For sure, a person with a butcher knife could slice, dice, and carve a person up more grotesquely but it would take considerable time and effort to do so and in the meantime someone could subdue him and prevent him from attacking others. In the same span of time that an attacker was busy killing one or two people with a knife or knives, twenty or more would be killed and seriously injured with an automatic weapon. But maybe I just lack a vivid enough imagination to picture such a "grotesque/bizarre" scenario with butcher knives. I'm curious and eager to know. Enlighten me.

Sandy You are correct. We need to do more to stop violence . We need to end this foolish gunfree zone nonsense that lets deranged people commit such atrocities without fear of someone defending the children. We should strengthen the school resource officer program and we should offer training to teachers and princeples to both use firearms to protect the children and ways to do so without using them.

We also need to do more to control the mental disabled. If they are a threat they should be detained and evealuated.

We can also quit agrandizing these people by plastering every gory detail of them and their act all over the tv 24/7. It is time we quit making them famous.

KWO...Capiche? Not hardly! As usual you don't make a lick of sense. Regardless of what the monsters who perpetrate the murders "seek" there is a huge difference between killing one or two people and a killing spree of 20 or more. While one victim is certainly too many, there are over 20 other lives that could have been spared if the perpetrator had been armed only with knives and the killing were limited to one or two; and countless more parents and friends and siblings would not be grieving for the loss of their little loved ones now. You still have not explained how a person armed with knives could do more "grotesque/bizarre" damage than someone with an arsenal of guns or even one semi-automatic weapon in the same time frame. And you cannot explain it because your claim is utter nonsense.

"But one law could have reduced the death toll: a law that prohibits the public from owning high capacity magazines for semi-automatic weapons. "

Maybe, or maybe not. The soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force in WW1 could fire as many as 20 rounds a minute from a single shot rifle. The average soldier could do 12 to 15. Again, these were single shot rifles. Revolvers and magazine fed pistols and rifles can be reloaded pretty darn fast regardless of magazine capacity.

I would far rather see all this angst and energy directed at the mental health issues and the dismal circumstances around them. I would include why known issues can't be considered during the NICS check at purchase. Privacy laws currently in place have to be adjusted somehow. More knee-jerk, feel good legislation passed by grandstanding politicos like Feinstein will be every bit as effective as the last AWB which is to say not at all.

If I may, let me suggest something you might find enlightening (if you have the interest)

"On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society" by Dave Grossman. I think you might find it enlightening . It certainly gave me pause especially considering the role of today's media, including but not limited to, video games.

Sailorman, I agree in part with you. The reduction (notice I did not say "prevention") of these acts is multi-dimensional. I am sure that the shooter in this case was a) skilled because he spent time with his mom practicing on a range but b) not highly skilled because he had not been trained by the military. Even gun enthusiasts agree that 3 rounds before reloading is adequate in hunting and in self-protection. The banning of high capacity magazines is only part. A kid like this one had issues-issues with attachment, issues socially. He should have not been trained to shoot. Period. But pinpointing the pathology that would result in such an act is almost impossible. The best you can do is make sure that anyone with anti-social behavior cannot get a gun. That means background checks that includes input from local law enforcement, who must intervene when there is a threat of violence in the home.

Such a person that commits an act like this is developmentally abnormal. Not necessarily treatable either. No drugs can "install" a conscience. But every person who commits such a crime has been noticed as being different: anti-social, unable to connect, violent, etc.

By the way, I have and have read Grossman's book. My spouse is a psychologist and is very interested in the connection between crime, prison population, and mental illness.

I'll disagree with the gun enthusiasts about the 3 round issue in this sense. Three is plenty for hunting. If you need more than that, what you really need is to get out of the woods and go practice. For self defense, there is no such thing as "too much". Other than that, we're fairly well in agreement. I have to wonder what people what people like Lanza would do if no firearm was available.

I would be interested in your opinion of Grossman's book. I found it - well, disturbing would be apt I think.

Sailorman, May I suggest that your statement about the British infantryman of WW1 is incorrect. In 1907 the Brits adopted the Lee-Enfield bolt action, 10 shot magazine fed .303 as their weapon of choice.

In the hands of the well-trained infantryman, it was successfully fired at 10-15 rpm. It was typically fed through the receiver using 5 round chargers, or loaded one at a time.

It was, however, so fast in firing by a trained rifleman, that Germans who used the 5 round 8mm Mauser, thought the Tommys were using semi-automatic rifles.

The .303 Enfield Rifle remained the rifle of the British Army through WW2 until 1957.

I have a WW1 Enfield manufactured in 1917, and a American-made Savage Enfield rifle made for the Brits as part of the Lend-Lease program before America's entry in 1941.

They are superb rifles, both used in France during two separate world wars.

Your recommendation of David Grossman's book is excellent. Gen. S.L.A. Marshall's study of the reluctance of trained combat soldiers to fire at the enemy, though later somewhat discredited in the numbers Gen. Marshall suggested, still remains a valid point in the distasteful taking of human life, even enemy combatants.

Ken: Humans and Chimpanzees are similar enough to be in the same GENUS. Not species. You know the difference? If not, back to basic Bio for you. Diamonds argument is not that humans and chimps can interbreed, it is that chimps and humans are so closely related that they belong in the same genus. Either they are Homo or we are Pan. The original classifications did not use genetics-DNA comparisons are changing how we classify groups of animals. My own avatar is a good example: the various lemurs have been reclassified based on the DNA studies done in the 90's, regrouping the animals. splitting the genus Lemur into several genus names such as Lemur, Eulemur and Varecia. Some 'separate' species have been shown to be the same, only color variants.

Humans are related through DNA to all living creatures. We share 40% of our DNA with bananas for heavens sake.

"The reason I repeatedly go back to the fact that monkeys and humans cannot procreate is that it proves that Jesus created monkeys, and, that Jesus created people."

It does not prove that WHATSOEVER. Monkeys and humans SHOULD NOT be able to procreate. They are separate species. The fact that monkeys and humans cannot procreate is evidence of speciation, which is evidence for evolution. YOU ARE PATENTLY IGNORANT AND ABNORMALLY ILLOGICAL.

Humans can be immoral without impunity. It happens everyday and has since the dawn of time. You are a great example of that. Your homophobia goes unpunished and is even encouraged by your religion. That's being immoral without impunity to the highest degree. Your statement is false. I'd also like to point out that monkeys aren't immoral. They are monkeys. There are no such things as monkey morals. Only humans can be immoral. We are the only species on earth that has the cognitive ability to even grasp ideas like morals. Saying that evolution gives someone the ability to be immoral is like saying being a polar bear gives you the right to be racist. It's nonsensical.

You believe humans were made from dirt. Scientifically literate people believe humans evolved from other hominids. You have no proof. Scientifically literate people have TONS of proof of evolution.

You are ignorant. You embrace ignorance and argue in favor of it. You are truly a fool. Your whole life is a lie.
