McCallie basketball coach Dan Wadley didn't think his team played particularly well Thursday night against Boyd-Buchanan in the Times Free Press Best of Preps tournament at Chattanooga State. But the fact his team made seven 3-point goals helped cure a lot of ills.

"When we hit shots," Wadley said after the Blue Tornado's 60-43 victory over Boyd-Buchanan, "we look like a good team."

They never trailed against the Buccaneers. But after having their 12-point halftime lead cut to 33-26, Wadley used a timeout with 4:16 to go in the third quarter.

Afterward, Jamaal Calvin and Jorden Williams made 3-point shots within 25 seconds of each other. And although Hall Allen connected from 3-point distance for the Bucs at the 3:23 mark, Williams answered from well behind the top of the key to make it 42-29.

"They hit a couple of quick 3s on us," Boyd-Buchanan coach Cole Rose said. "We were trying to shade their shooters and track them, but we kind of lost them coming out of that timeout."

After Boyd-Buchanan's Justus McMillan scored on a drive, McCallie scored the last eight points of the quarter to cap a 17-5 spurt.

"I thought that run was the difference in the game," Rose said. "They had a really good run and we were never quite able to put one together."

Williams led the Tornado with 17 points. Calvin had eight of his 15 during their 25-point third quarter. They also had three steals each.

"The guards got a little bit hot," Wadley said. "They've got to take those open shots and not hesitate. They've got to have the confidence to take them."

Eric Wolf contributed 10 points for McCallie.

Allen's 18 points paced the Bucs, and McMillan added 10. Zack Jenkins led with nine rebounds and Austin Walker grabbed eight.
