Wesleyan sweeps two from Milligan

The Tennessee Wesleyan College basketball teams swept an Appalachian Athletic Conference home basketball doubleheader Saturday afternoon against Milligan, while Bryan's teams both almost beat first-place Bluefield on the road in Virginia.

Wesleyan's men remained a half-game behind Bluefield with an 82-75 victory after the Lady Bulldogs prevailed 63-59.

Michelle Davis paced the TWC women (11-6, 5-2) with 27 points, 13 rebounds and three steals while Heather Gibson scored 13 points, Rochelle Davidson and Cody Houck each blocked three shots and Leah Frazier had six assists and eight rebounds. Candace Cain hit a clinching one-and-one set of free throws with eight seconds to go.

Desmond Crisp hit 10 of 12 free throws in scoring 24 points for the Bulldogs (11-8, 5-1), who got 16 points and four steals from Shannon Smith, 13 points from Quincy Scates and seven assists and three steals from E'Jay Ward.

Kearsten Marion scored 26 points and Byron Carpenter had 17 plus 11 rebounds for Bluefield (13-9, 6-1), holding off Bryan 68-67. The Lions got 19 points from Dion Fair, 16 from Rob Riley, 12 from Tim Fortenberry and 10 plus six assists and eight rebounds from Lavonte Henderson. Anna Thomas and Bethany McArthur each had 13 points, Thomas with seven rebounds, in the Lady Lions' 59-55 overtime loss.

At Mount Vernon, Ga., Lee's Flames downed Brewton-Parker 78-70 after the Lee women won 61-53 in their Southern States games. Angela Spann and Hollie German had 17 and 15 points and Karley Miller grabbed 12 rebounds for the Lady Flames (16-1, 8-0), ranked No. 7 in NAIA Division I. Ryan Westbrooks and Steve Bennett scored 19 and 18 points for the Flames (11-3, 6-2), and Alex Wells added 10.

At Covenant, visiting LaGrange beat the Lady Scots 97-81 and defeated the Scots 77-66 in a Great South doubleheader. Christine Core and Margaret Cross scored 24 and 19 points for the Covenant women, who got 14 points and nine rebounds from Jessie Blankenship and 11 points and eight assists from Morgan Woodward. Zarome Lakey and Bryant Engbers had 11 points each for the Scots.

At Buena Vista, Va., Tennessee Temple followed a 65-55 win Friday against Virginia-Lynchburg with a 64-56 loss Saturday to Southern Virginia, winning its 16th straight home game. Jarrett Smith had 14 points and eight rebounds for Temple (7-9), and Desmin Hall scored 13, while Corey Sanders had nine rebounds with 10 points.

In Chattanooga, Samantha Robinson's nine points and seven rebounds led Temple's Lady Crusaders in a 63-47 loss to Voorhees, their 18th in 19 games this season.

Andre Towns had 10 rebounds as Georgia Northwestern fell 65-45 at Middle Georgia Tech.
