The Snake Handler

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

I'd never heard of the Family Action Council of Tennessee. Their website is factn.org and I favor what they favor. David Fowler, former excellent state senator, seems to be one of their leaders, or maybe it's his outfit.

Vanderbilt won't force sororities to admit men nor fraternities to admit women, but it wants Christian campus groups to admit non-Christians. Would it force "gay" student groups to admit Family Action Council students?

Another day = another law. It would take too much political capital to address the causes, such as paying poor people to breed children they can't support, lack of real sex ed, access to contraceptives, so instead lets go after the professionals who are left dealing with unruly and uneducated parents. Fine the teacher if anyone holds hands and don't say gay. Throw in a little abstinance only and we will be in mayberry by the end of the session. And don't forget to outlaw makeup/jewelry since it leads to imorral behavior. Oh sorry wrong denomination. Just go after the saggin pants that'll please the elderly/white voting bloc.

Speaking of David Fowler, snake handlers, and con-artists, I noted another member of this group was quoted in the news a couple of days ago:

"American Family Association spokesman Bryan Fischer poked fun at Mitt Romney today on Focal Point following the resignation of Richard Grenell, an openly gay Romney spokesman on security issues who Fischer and other Religious Right leaders wanted ousted from the campaign:

FISHER: “Let me ask you this question, people have raised this question, if Romney can be pushed around, intimidated, coerced, coopted by a conservative radio talk show host in Middle America, then how is he going to stand up to the Chinese? How is he going to stand up to Putin? How is he going to stand up to North Korea if he can be pushed around by a yokel like me? I don’t think Romney is realizing the doubts that this begins to raise about his leadership. I don’t think for one minute that Mitt Romney did not want this guy gone; he wanted this guy gone because there was not one word of defense, not a peep, from the Romney camp to defend him. They just went absolutely stone cold silent, they put a bag over Grenell’s head, they even asked him to organize this phone conference and they didn’t even let him speak at the conference that he organized.”

There is a great commentary on Smart City Memphis about “Big Liars” and "Big Bullies:

“The folks at the Family Action Council of Tennessee suggest that they stand like a rock on their principles. That shouldn’t be particularly hard for them since it’s a rock that they’ve climbed out from under.

Even in an era where we have all become accustomed to the “Big Lie” as political strategy, the Family Action Council deserves the title as “Big Liars.” It’s not just that they spew hatred and prejudice, which were never values in the families we know, but that they so proudly lie about the fact while preying on people clinging to the belief that there is always a scapegoat who can be blamed for their frustration with a changing world.

It’s tempting just to ignore them, because it’s inarguable that they’re on the wrong side of history. Heck, they’re even on the wrong side of Christianity as they selectively obsess on a verse in the Bible to magnify their fixation on homosexuals while absolving themselves from any Biblical sanctions about divorce and other heterosexual behaviors.

Their political base is dying out, replaced by more tolerant and more moderate young people who aren’t interested in vilifying women who control their own bodies, objectifying homosexuals as if they are the cause of all that ails America, and condoning bullies in our schools. In a world known more and more by diversity and tolerance, they cling to the world where white men make the rules and decide who is a winner and who is a loser.”

The problem has existed ever since the creation of the Federal Reserve.

Oh, and Jack, Bush sent America "down the tubes" in 2007 and we have been clawing our way back up since then - with absolutely NO help from the clueless clowns in the right wing circus who have wasted their salaries since the last inauguration day in efforts to destroy our president rather than help our country. Indeed, JDavid. The most recent attack by extremist David Fowler and his "Family Action" Council is against Vanderbilt University and its “all comers” non-discrimination policy, which as I understand it has been upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court.

I find Vanderbilt’s “all-comers” policy to be fair and reasonable. To be recognized as an official student organization, the organization cannot discriminate against any student who wants to participate. Organizations without official recognition can limit membership and can engage in campus activity, but they must do so with their own funds rather than university funds.

Needless to say, David Fowler and his Family Action Council disagree:

“A politically influential conservative group is urging supporters to flood Gov. Bill Haslam’s phone lines in opposition to Haslam’s planned veto of a bill aimed at pressuring Vanderbilt University to drop an anti-discrimination policy affecting campus groups.

The “all-comers” policy requires student groups at the prestigious private university to let any interested students join and run for office. Several religious organizations have waged a high-profile battle to overturn it.

Family Action Council of Tennessee President David Fowler, a former Republican state senator who represented part of Hamilton County, made the appeal through an email alert today.”

Al-qaeda has been rendered all but impotent and we should get the hell out of Afghanistan and Iraq entirely...now. The Taliban will probably have their way when we leave and they will oppress the country, especially the women, like they did before. But the reason they are fighting us now is because we are there in the first place, OCCUPYING their country! If a military force from another country were here in America, occupying our land and killing our own people, most of us would be taking up arms against our occupiers too. You people who base your decisions on raw emotion and say stupid things like, "dude, The last I checked we were still at war with the Taliban as they are still killing our military men and women," well, there is no accounting for people who have sh#t for brains. President Nicolas Sarkozy lost to Socialist candidate Francois Hollande, who had criticized the country's austerity program and wants to boost government spending.

If there is a continued backlash against austerity policies, Hollande would face additional pressure to boost spending sharply. That could lead to further downgrades of France's credit rating and kick off a fresh wave of crisis fears, destabilizing global markets.

The very idea of a so-called "Christian" group opposing admission of non-Christians is against every word of the New Testament.

The real fact, which everyone overlooks, is that when a person becomes a Christian and is entered by The Holy Spirit, their every thought, word, action and deed is guided by Him. A true Christian has nothing to fear; period. Attempting to manipulate other people is hopeless.

There's an old line about a church not being a country club for Christians, but rather, a hospital for sinners. Gays and atheists are out in the open now; that makes them easy to find. Exposing them to the love of Christ is the way to put a crack in their faulty system of beliefs and allow them to change.

The Apostle Paul is the model of how a person comes to Christ; struck blind on the road to Damascus, and delivered by faith.

Let them in. Love them. Let it rub off.

If you only want to be a cheerleader for the God squad, without dealing with the people who need to be healed, you're a member of a cult. Jesus would not keep them out.

As for your comment that Obama has not done one thing that has helped the economy...the single most important thing he did was to save the auto industry. I know you conservatives will never give him credit for that but I don't care how you spin it, slice it, or dice it, that was a success by anyone's definition. Do you have any idea the number of jobs that would have been lost if it had been allowed to fail - not just auto industry jobs but those in the many other markets that rely heavily on it? Obama announces official re-election bid!! To a mere 10,000 people in Columbus OH.. Remember the good old days when the celebrity in chief sold out stadiums like an '80's rock band? Now he can't even get 11'000 people to show up!! Pathetic!! Lots of empty seats wherever he goes! This is a bad sign for the anointed one.

Does anyone remember the subject? What was it again? Oh, yea...Bennett took a shot at the religious part of the Republican party. Being basically a libertarian, I don't care which foot, the right or the left, kicks me in the ass. The liberals are basically right on this one. The Republican party wants to use the power of the state government for what ever they want, and the democrats want to use the same power but for a different reason. They can both go to hell. The problem is that they are going to take the rest of us with them.

This religious clap trap is silly, insulting and beneath a true conservative.
