The Bounce

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

The national debt topped $16 trillion on Tuesday, adding fuel to Republicans' criticisms of President Obama's deficit spending just as the Democrats are kicking off their national convention.

But if you thought China's been doing most of the bankrolling, you might be surprised to learn who really holds our federal mortgage.

Fully two-thirds of the national debt is owed to the U.S. government, American investors and future retirees, through the Social Security Trust Fund and pension plans for civil service workers and military personnel. China, it turns out, holds less than 8 percent of the money our government has borrowed over the years.

“It is true that China is the largest foreign owner of our debt,” said Josh Gordon, policy director of the Concord Coalition, a Virginia-based nonprofit that advocates getting the nation’s debt under control. “But the vast majority of our debt is held by us.”

Economists differ on when the National Debt actually crested the $16 trillion mark, with some saying it occurred on Friday and others saying it happens on Tuesday. But none doubt that the federal government's tab is immense and growing. Just under $5 trillion of the national debt is owed to the Social Security Trust Fund and federal pension systems. A little more than $11 trillion is owed to foreign and domestic investors and the Federal Reserve, which buys up treasuries in order to drag down interest rates through quantitative easing.

A female speaking at either convention could have just farted in the microphone and the commenting journalist would swoon and brag on it as an inspiring and wonderful speech. Ms. Romney and Obama both have that unique ability to talk at length and say nothing.

Obama is positioned much more in the middle.

I saw no one enthralled by the RNC, except those who seemingly don't understand or dont care when they are being deceived..... He enthralled his base. That's a requirement to win, but he probably needs more.

According to Nate Silver, a political statistician who writes the Five-Thirty-Eight column for the New York Times, the typical "Convention Bounce" is an increase in the polls of four or five percentage points. Moonpie, you're quite right (as in "correct," not like a wing-nut). The GOP convention was a sad staged event built on big lies laced with dishonor and deceit.
The American people -- at least most of us -- know Romney-Ryan's agenda will help the 1% amass even more wealth while everyone else struggles. They'll funnel more federal funds to subsidize big oil, while taking down the safety net that protects average workers.
In contrast, the Democratic convention is booming with authenticity and enthusiasm for another term. President Obama tried working with the Repubs, but they behaved like spoiled children, refusing to cooperate even when the nation's credit and reputation were at stake.
People know who are the real patriots, and who represents the PEOPLE (vs. the corporations). We won't trust our nation to the guy who made a career of stripping assets from domestic companies, firing workers, and sending profits out of the country to the Cayman Islands and secret Swiss accounts.

Starting in 2013, an extra 0.9% Medicare tax will be charged on: (1) salary and/or SE income above $200,000 for an unmarried individual, (2) combined salary and/or SE income above $250,000 for a married joint-filing couple, and (3) salary and/or SE income above $125,000 for those who use married filing separate status. For self-employed individuals, the additional 0.9% Medicare tax hit will come in the form of a higher SE bill.

But that's not all. Also starting in 2013, all or part of the net investment income, including long-term capital gains and dividends, collected by higher-income folks can get socked with an additional 3.8% "Medicare contribution tax." Therefore, the maximum federal rate on long-term gains for 2013 and beyond will actually be 23.8% (versus the current 15%) and the maximum rate on dividends will be a whopping 43.4% (versus the current 15%).

When the O's tell their "story" about hard times remember this:

First Lady Michelle Obama’s pitch to voters last night relied on the premise that she and her husband understand what it is to struggle to make ends meet. She spoke movingly about their early years--about how a young Barack Obama drove a car that was “rusted out" and found his furniture “in a dumpster,” how they both came from families that had to “scrape by.” Her fairy tale--however well-delivered--was one great, big colorful lie.

Both Michelle Robinson and Barack Obama began their adult lives with a leg up on the rest of America. They attended elite schools: Michelle went to Whitney Young, the public magnet school for Chicago’s upper class, while Barack attended Punahou, the private prep school for the top stratum of Hawaiian society. They were accepted to Ivy League schools despite undistinguished credentials, and both attended Harvard Law School.

“[B]elieve it or not, when we were first married, our combined monthly student loan bills were actually higher than our mortgage,” Michelle said. That sounds like a raw deal--but in fact reflects their fortunate circumstances. They had both just graduated from a very expensive law school, and their combined income from cushy law firm jobs dwarfed the repayments. Barack also soon enjoyed a second salary from the University of Chicago.

They had expensive tastes, reflected in the $277,500 two-bedroom condo they bought in 1993--a high price even by today’s standards. Several years later, they moved into their $1.65 million mansion in Hyde Park--with the help of fraudster Tony Rezko. Barack often told a story of hardship on the campaign trail in 2008 about having his credit card declined--once. The fact that he thought this counted as real hardship speaks volumes.

September 5, 2012 at 9:57 a.m.
mymy said...

The rest of the "story"

As her husband moved onto the national political stage, Michelle Obama began to enjoy a lavish lifestyle at taxpayer expense, directly and indirectly. When Barack Obama was elected to the U.S. Senate, he obtained a $1 million earmark for the University of Chicago Hospital--and his wife’s salary as Vice President for Community Affairs jumped from $121,910 to $316,962. Her job: pushing poor, uninsured patients to other hospitals.

As First Lady, Michelle Obama has lived high on the hog while the rest of the country has suffered through an extraordinary recession. In 2010, she and her entourage decamped to Spain for a lavish vacation. That summer, the Obamas encouraged Americans to visit the Gulf coast after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, which threatened tourism in the region. They promptly jetted off to Maine for their own summer holiday.

This summer, the Obamas skipped their usual summer trip to the wealthy playground of Martha’s Vineyard--months after Michelle and her daughters had enjoyed an expensive winter skiing trip in Aspen. And, of course, there are the frequent pilgrimages to Hawaii, Some of their family’s comfort, of course, comes from private income, principally Barack Obama’s book sales--yet even that wealth is a spin-off of Obama’s political career.

If, as the Democrats eagerly pointing out, Mitt Romney enjoyed the privilege of private wealth, the Obamas have enjoyed privilege funded by public money and public life. And until entering the national spotlight, they gave little to charity, contributing instead to a church that preached racial grievance. “[T]ruth matters,” Michelle Obama told the nation last night. That, too, is a lie--because so far, she has evaded it without consequence.

"Alpo thinks Moochelle's speech was good?"

I'm hardly alone in that opinion. I flipped over to Fox News just as she ended her speech and most of the talking heads over there offered the same opinion, with the exception of course, of Mr. Rove.

"Alpo has a crush on the woman."

A crush? No, but I do find the woman to be very well spoken, pleasant on the eyes, classy in all respects, and a compliment to all the other fine First Ladies who have served this nation well.

"By the way, I would LOVE to see her degree in nutrition or any other credentials she may have acquired over the years as an astute expert on nutrition. I know alpo will provide and post a copy of said documents."

First of all, it does not take a genius to know which foods are nutritious and which foods are not. Second, the First Lady, contrary to your previous and other unsubstantiated charge, has never held herself up to be a nutritional expert.

Clearly, all one has to do is to look at her and her children, to arrive at the conclusion that she kinda knows a little about good food and insists that her children adopt good eating habits as well.

I wonder, are you equally critical of Arnold Schwarzenegger? A few years back, before he entered into politics, he too embarked on a similar movement to combat childhood obesity, touring the nation, and speaking at length to school age children about the importance of good nutrition.

You're really pathetic to pick on the First Lady over this or any other issue. Regardless as to how you may feel about her husband, Michelle Obama has represented this nation extremely well and has done nothing to deserve the kind of comments that you have offered.

But keep up the good work at aligning yourself with all the other Obama family bashers, and never forget for one second that every time you point a finger at one of them, four more are pointed right back at you.

You Sir are clearly a racist. You're xenophibic references in just about every post you offer is living testimony to the fact that you are a very disturbed individual.

You are a dead horse beater too. You post the same diatribe over and over and over, as if you haven't made the same points hundreds of times in the past.

"If you disagree with a women you have a war on women."

Contrary to your assessment, people are astute enough to know the difference between a disagreement and an attack.

"If you disagree with a gay person you hate gays."

And I'll just bet that you've never referred to anyone whom you suspected as being a homosexual with a derogatory, eh?

"This is as far as their lack of intellect will take them."

You truly shouldn't opine on issues that are of a foreign nature to you. It makes you look silly.

"They have no concept of another opinion and interpret such as a personal attack that is why they let their messiah Hussein Obama continue to lie and take advantage of their ignorance."

Sigh....

"They view holding him accountable for his failures as them attacking him when in fact it is a healthy thing to do."

If what you do on a daily basis could ever be described as "holding him accountable," and it were equally described as something "healthy to do," you'd be Lance Armstrong's long lost twin brother.

I'm quite confident that when you look in the mirror, reality smacks you in the face.

If you put as much effort into your chosen profession as you do in bashing the President, 200 people up in Ohio would probably still have jobs. Or is that too, the fault of President Obama?

Who cares?

The seating capacity for the GOP Convention in Tampa was between 40,000 - 45,000 people. It's a lot easier to fill up a smaller venue. I'm sure that had the sites been switched, the GOP might have just as much trouble filling a stadium that size of Charlotte's.

You see, people who support Democrats do have a life and cannot drop everything to hop a jet and spend three days in a stadium in Charlotte, N.C. Most of those who support Democrats do well to house, clothe, and feed their families.

The point being, that the Democrats planned for and made room for as many people as possible. Last night, it looked to me as if they had a full crowd. Thursday night is climax night. You can bet that the house will be packed, be it inside or out.

You may want to check the math on the claim of 4.5 million jobs created. Do the math on the net jobs Hired compared to fired or laid off as some prefer to call it. Compare the compensation of the added jobs to the lost jobs. Republicans claim their plan will add 12 million jobs over the next 4 years. 250,000 net additional jobs (added minus lost=net added) a month which is needed to reduce unemployment. I don't believe they can do that except by the same math methods the democrats are using. Disposable income has gone down along with the average work week, average wage and other critical middle and lower income measurements. The approaching tax rate increase and the Obamacare tax will take a hell of a bite of purchasing power/demand.

I really believe Obama thinks every dollar belongs to or should belong to the government and the government should distribute all the money equally among the non-government people and those he views as elite and deserving.

They have worked hard creating that base. They have made many of them addicted to handouts which comes quick and votes are bought and paid for. A rare few break the cycle of poverty. Most just produce another generation and another to increase the base (like the mother of 15 posted a few days ago). Dems could care less about them only their vote to stay in power. As a country, we cannot continue down this road.

The Liberals have done more to destroy society and eventually this country. Obama has put us in a faster tail spin downward, but just needs more time for his destructive changes, Moochelle begs! I hope enough people wake up and not let this happen.

Tu, In 2009, we lost 4.2 million private sector jobs, according to labor statistics, with the absolute nadir in early 2010. The free fall started before Obama was inaugurated. You have to give him a little time for his policies to work.

We have since recovered all of those jobs. That is where the numbers come from.

Now you can argue that those jobs were lost under his watch. True.

But those jobs were not lost as a result of his policies.

He'd like to claim those jobs were regained as a result of his policies.

Perhaps some were. I'm sure there is room for debate.

The question is, without his policies, what would the job situation be? Where would we be as a country if we had defaulted on our debt (as the Republicans threatened)? How many jobs were saved by his intervention in the automotive industry? Republicans were so dead-set on opposing Obama and making him a one-term President, they were willing to hold their country hostage.

Here is what Alpo said about Herman Cain:

Personally, I think he's as guilty as can be. There's too much smoke not to be on fire.

The affair accusation seems to be solid. The woman has proof of contact between the two of them right up to the week before he announced his candidacy for President.

And as usual, he denies it. Cain's credibility is zilch at this point.

November 30, 2011 at 10:27 a.m.

But when Clinton pointed his finger at the entire nation and denied he had sex with Monica Lewinsky, Al doesn't mention anything about Clinton's credibility and refers to Bill Clinton a charismatic man. I bet Junitia Broadrick thought Billy Jefferson (BJ) Clinton was a charismatic man when she accused him of sexual assualt. I bet Kathleen Willy felt the same way when Clinton was groping her.

Al, you are quick to throw Herman Cain under the bus but will defend and worship Clinton.

Of course it has noting to do with Cain being black it just must be because he is a republican. At the very least you are a hypocrite.

DEMOCRATS GET TO DECIDE WHAT YOU KEEP.

Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., made made the below comment on Chicago's Don & Roma radio show recently.

Schakowsky was asked to define what Democrats meant by paying your fair share and define how much of our income we deserve to keep. "I'll put it this way, you don't deserve to keep all of it. It's not a question of deserving, because what government is, is those things we decide to do together." Government has the right to all your income and will decide what you get to keep.

CNN concludes: "The figure of 4.5 million jobs is accurate if you look at the most favorable period and category for the administration. But overall, there are still fewer people working now than when Obama took office at the height of the recession."

I offered a little sarcasm in response to patriot1's remark about Bill Clinton currently being "Monica Lewinsky's boyfriend."

Look...I don't admire Bill Clinton for the notches that he's put on his bed posts or on the Presidential Desk in the Oval Office. Clearly, he did wrong, but lots of water has flowed under the bridge since the man was impeached, and it appears that Hillary has forgiven him for what he did.

He absolutely violated the oaths he took when he married his wife, but according to U.S. law, violating one's marriage vows is not a crime. He's paid his price for lying under oath.

It's long past time for some people to move on beyond what happened, for most of America has.

"I bet Junitia Broadrick thought Billy Jefferson (BJ) Clinton was a charismatic man when she accused him of sexual assualt. I bet Kathleen Willy felt the same way when Clinton was groping her."

Ancient history, and there was nothing ever proven in either of those cases either. If nothing else, Bill Clinton did a much better job at convincing the American people that the charges were bunk.

"Al, you are quick to throw Herman Cain under the bus but will defend and worship Clinton."

Five women came forward telling the same story. The content of his denials were laughable. Had he not been so unbelievable and unconvincing, I might have formed some doubt in my mind, but you have to know that not many people found Herman Cain credible at all in his denials.

"Of course it has noting to do with Cain being black it just must be because he is a republican. At the very least you are a hypocrite."

Aw gee...forgive me for offering a little sarcasm when someone revives a long dead issue at the mere mention of the name of the man.

He argued his case that was beamed into every American's living rooms, and with the exception of a small penalty for lying under oath, he came out a total winner.

"Clinton has also proven himself to be a racist. Clinton said of Obama in 2008, "A couple of years ago he would have been carrying our bags for us". Where's the outrage from these people at?"

I take your claim with a grain of salt. Every racist, when accused, bites back with claims and lists of people that they suddenly admire to "prove" that they are not racist. Admiration from afar is quite pointless.

Your xenophobic posts betray that list and they tell a far different story.

Uh...how can you have a "net increase" of any figure above zero if there are fewer people working than there once were? You're altering the story just a wee bit.

"CNN concludes: "The figure of 4.5 million jobs is accurate if you look at the most favorable period and category for the administration. But overall, there are still fewer people working now than when Obama took office at the height of the recession."

If that were true, then there would not be a "net increase" of 300,000 jobs.

Nobody has ever claimed, including the President himself, that there have been 4.5 million jobs created above the zero line. When he walked into the Oval Office on January 20, 2009, the net loss figure was way below that zero line.

Considering that this nation was bleeding jobs to the tune of 800,000 per month on that day, and that we are now creating more jobs per month than are lost, and have done so for every month for the last 34 months in a row, I'd say that qualifies as something positive.

That does not mean that the President deserves full credit for those figures, but since he is blamed all the time for anything negative, I'm inclined to cut him some slack.

Say what anyone will, Bill Clinton laid out some rather pointed facts in his speech. By noon tomorrow, many people will do their level best to shred or confirm those facts. Shredding them is gonna be a tall order. But, many will try nonetheless.

He also did a fine job of laying ground to the many accomplishments the President Obama has achieved since he has been in office.

No one can accuse Bill Clinton of needing a teleprompter to give a stirring speech. NBC News reported that he went off track from the pre-released text numerous times, adding 18 minutes to his allotted time.

I know that I'll be accused of bias, but the DNC has been far more interesting to watch, the speakers have been far and above more pleasant in the way they came across, without all the anger that I witnessed last week, and the overall tone has been far more positive in nature.

I can hardly wait for climax night tomorrow, as well as the immense bump in the polls for the President that I am confident that will follow the convention, that R&R wished that they were enjoying now, but aren't.
