Choral Arts offers Brahms' Requiem

The German Requiem to be presented in two venues next week holds special meaning for Choral Arts of Chattanooga.

President Lonna P. Williams says the group will be singing without one of its members.

"The singers (will) share this Requiem with a true sense of poignancy, in remembrance of baritone Carl Hansen, who was rehearsing to perform this work with the group until his unexpected death last month," she says in a news release.

Composed by Johannes Brahms between 1865 and 1868, the Requiem is one of the most beloved of all sacred compositions and is considered "a Requiem for all people," Williams says.

Keith Reas, artistic director of Choral Arts, has selected an alternate version of the work for the spring concert.

Brahms arranged the piano duet (four hands on one piano) and presented it in English.

Accompanist David Friberg will be joined at the piano by Penny Tullock. Soloists for the concert are soprano Lucia Elena Sanchez and baritone Ted Long.

Concerts will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 21, at Church of the Good Shepherd, 211 Franklin Road, Lookout Mountain, and at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Brainerd United Methodist, 4315 Brainerd Road.

Admission is $15. Children under 12 get in free. Students with ID pay $5. Payment may be made by cash, check or credit card.
