Crayons, notebooks, backpacks, scissors ...
Area residents have a chance to "Stuff the Bus" with school supplies during the fourth annual Live United Day at Chattanooga Market on Sunday, Aug. 18.
Coordinated by the United Way of Greater Chattanooga, last year's effort collected more than $16,000 worth of supplies for the Hamilton County PTA Teacher Supply Depot. This year's goal is to increase one-day Live United Day gifts to $20,000 in supplies. The drive continues through Oct. 31, with a total goal of $50,000 worth of supplies to be used by local students throughout the year.
More than a dozen United Way partners will have booths set up throughout the market with children's games, arts, crafts and healthy activities for children and their families to enjoy. Parents also can sign their toddlers up for free books and learning checkups. Every child who completes a learning checkup at the market that day will be mailed a voucher for a free family pass to the Creative Discovery Museum.
United Way will have Live United T-shirts on sale, and all proceeds benefit the organization and its partner agencies.
Marketgoers also can enjoy Chattanooga Market's regular vendors, who will have food, fresh flowers, local produce and handmade creations, including jewelry, art, clothing, metal work and pottery.
Entertainment will be provided by Jacob Johnson, a South Carolina native who has shared stages with songwriting masters from Edwin McCain to David Wilcox.
Following Johnson onstage will be Roxie Randle of Illinois. Randle has built a loyal regional following with regular gigs at Nashville hotspots and frequent stops in Knoxville, Atlanta and other nearby cities. Her song "United" was recently chosen by United Way of Southwestern Indiana to be its 2013 theme.
