The Chattanooga Warriors 99 softball team had won their five previous tournaments but had to settle for second place in the 14-under age group in the Scenic City Showcase.
The Birmingham Thunderbolts 99 won 9-1 in the title game Sunday at Frost Stadium, leaving the Warriors 5-2 for the weekend and making them the highest-finishing local team in the competition that also featured 16- and 18-under age groups.
Two Tennessee Fury teams advanced as far as quarterfinals in 16-under before losing.
The Warriors, a first-year 14-under team, had posted shutouts in their first two games Sunday. The first was a six-run victory over the Georgia Force in which Shelby Duggard pitched a no-hitter. She then teamed with Shonna Penney in the semifinal, which they won by four over the Tampa Mustangs.
Duggard threw 14 2/3 innings in the tournament and struck out 14. Penney had five strikeouts in her nine innings pitched. Both allowed 10 hits and one earned run.
Kaili Crawley sparked the offense, going 11-for-15 with two homers and nine RBIs. She had at least one hit in every game and scored a run in every game except the last.
"We pitched real well and hit real well," said Warriors coach Victor Duggard, whose team batted .377 over the four days of the event and outscored their opponents 33-19. "We did a lot of things well until the last game. We made a lot of plays and did the things we were supposed to do until the last one. These girls have played really well all year."
Kaylee Womack helped support Crawley's effort by going 7-for-15 and scoring five runs. Kayla Boseman went 5-for-12 and also had a team-high four walks for the Warriors, who have already clinched a berth in their age group's Amateur Softball Association national tournament.
