about Clay Bennett...
The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

The special city election needs to be moved to August. Small, low turnout special interest elections do not mirror the will of the people. Charter revision is warranted to follow the county/state August elections, where turnout is 40 percent of so.
16 percent! Great Job Chattanooga. More people comment on Clays toons than vote in elections.
Simple cartoon, yet it captures the whole picture! Good job Clay!
Yes, aae, move the election date; one election is cheaper than two. (If more votes had been cast four years ago, it would've been harder to get enough signatures to recall Mayor Littlefield as he deserved.) But there's this to be said for low turnouts: the election isn't widely felt to be hugely important. When the Nazis were running against the Communists in the Wiemar Republic, turnout was high because the platform of each was to exterminate the other. That was not good. (If you still have your "I voted" sticker, it MIGHT be good for treats at some area restaurants, unless that was yesterday only.)
Good morning Ike.
A Christian is nothing but a sinful man who has put himself to school for Christ for the honest purpose of becoming better. Henry Ward Beecher
If you think the turn out was pitiful yesterday, just imagine what the run-offs will look like.
alprova, elect to keep your word and ignore this, but if you elect to break your word please don't blaspheme.
The Holman Bible Dictionary says this about Blasphemy:
"Blasphemy - is a transliteration of a Greek word meaning literally “to speak harm.” In the biblical context, blasphemy is an attitude of disrespect that finds expression in an act directed against the character of God."
The 1901 Jewish Encyclopedia Blasphemy
"Evil or profane speaking of God. The essence of the crime consists in the impious purpose in using the words, and does not necessarily include the performance of any desecrating act."
The Catholic Encyclopedia Blasphemy
"Blasphemy (Greek blaptein , "to injure", and pheme , "reputation") signifies etymologically gross irreverence towards any person or thing worthy of exalted esteem"
"Blasphemy, by reason of the significance of the words with which it is expressed, may be of three kinds."
"1.It is heretical when the insult to God involves a declaration that is against faith, as in the assertion: "God is cruel and unjust" or "The noblest work of man is God"
Especially note "cruel and unjust" and then your blasphemous words :
"If the Biblical tale is indeed true, then God senselessly murdered millions of innocent humans and billions of animals in the flood. Even if there was the remote possibility in justifying the murder of people, what possible justification could have existed for wiping out most all animal life?"
"Some of you may have never considered asking these questions. The flood, if true, was an atrocity of the highest order. It was mass murder on a global scale."
"The idea that we are to accept a mass-murderer as an object of worship doesn't reflect well upon Christians at all. If he murdered nearly every human on the planet, God is far more heinous than Hitler. Yet Christians are to willfully worship him without question. Why?"
"In the book of Exodus 12:28, God supposedly claims to murder every Israelite firstborn son and the firstborn of all their livestock. Isaiah 13, Jeremiah 49:20, Hosea 13, Numbers 31, In Deuteronomy 3, and 30 other times within the Bible, there are references to God committing more questionable murderous acts."
"Does this make sense to everyone?"
Bennett, the blind hog, has found another acorn.
There is a simple reason for the low turn-out.
First of all, have you ever wondered why the city elections are in March instead of August or November with the other elections?
It is simple, it is easier to manipulate a low turn-out election when you have a political machine. It was to ensure the "right" people got elected.
The proof of this is also simple, elections in March are expensive when compared to August or November coinciding with other elections.
All that needs to be done is to change the date of the election and the turn-out would be higher.
This is not a partisan issue because city elections are non-partisan. The political cross-dressers in the power structure can come in both Red and Blue colors. Actually their color is green, like money. The new mayor is a prime example of that fact.
The best public private mayor money can buy. Nothing ever changes in Chattanooga.
"timbo said... All that needs to be done is to change the date of the election and the turn-out would be higher"
For once, 100% agreement; check the weather forecast a blizzard is probably on the way or ice cream just froze in Hades.
Take a civics course, Clay.
President Obama is NOT ALLOWED TO VOTE. Only Joe Biden can do that to break a tie in the Senate.
Geez.
16% is a sad representation. I haven't looked it up but I can't remember ever seeing participation that low. Agree that nothing ever changes around here. Money does the talking.
Guess we can expect more of the same around here with the new mayor.
Criticize, whine, complain...sounds like a typical TFP cartoon.

I'm mystified as to what prompted this particular comment.
I'm guessing you are totally clueless to what this cartoon is all about.
It most certainly had nothing to do with the President, the Vice President, or the United States Senate.
But...don't let that stop you. You're on a roll...
good one prarie dog....looks like Obama's list to me...
I could care less about low voter participation, makes my vote count.
My council person ran unopposed. just sayin. add to that the mayor is gonna do what? who knows but in all fiarness Brainerd is getting sidewalks a park and a new name so the results of her hard work are starting to manifest. Still 16% is pathetic.
Brainerd is beginning to show new life. It's not the hub of commerce that it once was with Eastgate but it's new life just the same.
Yes it is IBSHAME and I have to give credit to Mrs Bertz hard work. The art scene and studio shops mom and pop stores are springing up from the ridge to eastgate . And I'm not talking chikfilet but places like Hermans out of the blue and the eastgate towncenter just to name a few. Got a farmers market getting started a couple art and dance studios now add in the removal of all those decrepid telephone poles and a pedestrian friendly infostructure and maybe just maybe living there the past several years will finally pay off. I keep telling the locals it is the next north chatt and they just laugh as all the out of towners grab up the cheap property.
(Reuters) - When President Barack Obama cited cost as a reason to bring troops home from Afghanistan, he referred to a $1 trillion price tag for America's wars.
Staggering as it is, that figure grossly underestimates the total cost of wars in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan to the U.S. Treasury and ignores more imposing costs yet to come, according to a study released on Wednesday.
The final bill will run at least $3.7 trillion and could reach as high as $4.4 trillion, according to the research project "Costs of War" by Brown University's Watson Institute for International Studies. (www.costsofwar.org)
>Seems like if we hadn't of gone to war based totally on a pack of outright lies by the Halliburton/Cheney/Bush administration, Sequestration may not have even been necessary. If your looking for something to piss and moan about, I would suggest you start here. BTW this article is from 2011. And there are still 7.8 million people displaced from the Iraqi war, want a recipe for creating some terrorist there's a few million of them. Cowboy george and dick face cheney should be in prison.
Limric said a couple of days ago we would be visiting Iran soon, looks like we may make it to North Korea first.
The voter turnout may have been low in Chattanooga but even so several new faces will be in the news running the city. The voters are obviously tired of the same old politics locally. Let's stop the same old politics and gridlock in Washington by changing the faces at the federal level the next election.
By Ballotpedia's state legislative team:
Historically, incumbents who run for re-election rarely lose in the primary. The following incumbents were defeated in the 2012 state legislative elections.
A total of 197 incumbents were defeated in 2012 legislative primaries. The breakdown is:
Here's a good start!

Good luck with that one. We see everyone else's representative as being the problem, but we don't vote for them. Those that do, don't see their representatives as being the problem. They probably think that ours are the problem.
So the cycle continues...
Alprova,
It may be about our local election, but it fits President Obama very well. Pardon me for drawing a logical conclusion.
Uh, let's see . . . where did I hear that phrase . . . something like, uh, "The voters have chosen." Yeah, that was it.
Oh, didn't YOU use that one somewhere, Clay? Or some of you others?
The voters MUST be right, so, I guess you'll have to deal with it.
