The special city election needs to be moved to August. Small, low turnout special interest elections do not mirror the will of the people. Charter revision is warranted to follow the county/state August elections, where turnout is 40 percent of so.

Yes, aae, move the election date; one election is cheaper than two. (If more votes had been cast four years ago, it would've been harder to get enough signatures to recall Mayor Littlefield as he deserved.) But there's this to be said for low turnouts: the election isn't widely felt to be hugely important. When the Nazis were running against the Communists in the Wiemar Republic, turnout was high because the platform of each was to exterminate the other. That was not good. (If you still have your "I voted" sticker, it MIGHT be good for treats at some area restaurants, unless that was yesterday only.)

There is a simple reason for the low turn-out.
First of all, have you ever wondered why the city elections are in March instead of August or November with the other elections?
It is simple, it is easier to manipulate a low turn-out election when you have a political machine. It was to ensure the "right" people got elected.
The proof of this is also simple, elections in March are expensive when compared to August or November coinciding with other elections.
All that needs to be done is to change the date of the election and the turn-out would be higher.
This is not a partisan issue because city elections are non-partisan. The political cross-dressers in the power structure can come in both Red and Blue colors. Actually their color is green, like money. The new mayor is a prime example of that fact.
The best public private mayor money can buy. Nothing ever changes in Chattanooga.

My council person ran unopposed. just sayin. add to that the mayor is gonna do what? who knows but in all fiarness Brainerd is getting sidewalks a park and a new name so the results of her hard work are starting to manifest. Still 16% is pathetic.
Brainerd is beginning to show new life. It's not the hub of commerce that it once was with Eastgate but it's new life just the same.
Yes it is IBSHAME and I have to give credit to Mrs Bertz hard work. The art scene and studio shops mom and pop stores are springing up from the ridge to eastgate . And I'm not talking chikfilet but places like Hermans out of the blue and the eastgate towncenter just to name a few. Got a farmers market getting started a couple art and dance studios now add in the removal of all those decrepid telephone poles and a pedestrian friendly infostructure and maybe just maybe living there the past several years will finally pay off. I keep telling the locals it is the next north chatt and they just laugh as all the out of towners grab up the cheap property.

The voter turnout may have been low in Chattanooga but even so several new faces will be in the news running the city. The voters are obviously tired of the same old politics locally. Let's stop the same old politics and gridlock in Washington by changing the faces at the federal level the next election.
