The Choice

about Clay Bennett...

The son of a career army officer, Bennett led a nomadic life, attending ten different schools before graduating in 1980 from the University of North Alabama with degrees in Art and History. After brief stints as a staff artist at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Fayetteville (NC) Times, he went on to serve as the editorial cartoonist for the St. Petersburg Times (1981-1994) and The Christian Science Monitor (1997-2007), before joining the staff of the ...

Yes, little tea baggers, don't worry about winning elections anymore.

Demand that we deport those ‘illegals’ back where they came from. Make sure criminals and psychopaths can still legally buy guns whenever they want. Don't forget to coddle millionaires, crap on the middle class, and shank the poor.

Republicans for years would target white voters with fear mongering and race baiting and it worked out fairly well. You guys cheered when Reagan carped about 'welfare queens driving Cadillacs.' Pappy Bush got a lot of mileage with that Willie Horton ad. These days the GOP must be content marginalizing hispanics, women, and everyone living in poverty.

But times change and demographics change. Change is the only constant, but don't you change!

Stick to your principles. The Archives are preparing a special place for republicans in the basement next to the Mugwumps, Whigs, and Know-Nothings. Congratulations! Your place in history is secure.

Your legacy? Not so much ...

Reagan won the Cold War. Gingrich reformed welfare bipartisanally. The Willie Horton ad was racist because 12 of 14 criminals were white, too high a percentage. Under previous presidents the rich may have gotten richer faster than the poor did, but under President Obama the poor have actually gotten poorer while the rich still got richer: he flies his corporate jet to play golf while schoolkids can no longer tour his public housing, even as a gift from Sean Hannity, who offered to pay the cost of some White House tours. (Draw that, Clay?) Elections? We'll see.

"Reagan won the Cold War."

He may have won the Cold War with Russia, but we're still fighting it with Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea. They're the little brothers of Russia coming back for revenge.

"Under previous presidents the rich may have gotten richer faster than the poor did, but under President Obama the poor have actually gotten poorer while the rich still got richer"

That statement doesn't coincide with the socialist, "steal from the rich to give to the poor", "47%" rhetoric that you and others are spouting. Which is it? Is Obama a socialist or not?

I'd also like to point out that the statement "...the rich may have gotten richer faster than the poor did..." is one of the biggest understatements of all time. My only response would be to say "No Sh!t". Did you come up with that "genius" line all by yourself, Andrew?

Also, the poor did not get richer under the previous President. The poverty gap widened under Bush.

A little insight into our economy woes:

Ah, yes, the right wing ideologists are going the way of Whig's. And none too soon. They're trying to drag this country over the cliff and take as many with them as they can. The obscenely wealthy in this country can pack their worldly goods and head off to one of their islands or castles in a foreign land and just leave us here with an uncared for country. That's why they treat it like a 'rental'. They don't care if the air is unfit to breathe, or the water undrinkable or people starving in their homes, they're leaving as soon as they finish trashing and stealing the wealth of this country.

Blackwastewater, You sure are entertaining when you're drinking. I especially enjoy the elementary school name calling.

Now if reality has anything to do with this cartoon corner and what we perceive as needed are more poor unskilled illegal aliens added to the list of "Legal Americans", we as a nation must decide how to pay for the goods and services we promise to provide for our newest citizens. If anyone follows what insurance companies have been saying and lawmakers have accepted, insurance costs are and will continue to skyrocket with no end in sight. So the path to citizenship will either be paved with gold or we must reform what is freely given to the newcomers. The argument that the new Americans that arrived at Ellis Island were given citizenship is far different from what is offered today. There were no social programs offered free of charge at taxpayer expense. The country needed more citizens and many arrived with skills that allowed them to be self sufficient. These same people also survived the Great Depression and in fact were The Greatest Generation. So what happened?

acerigger, you will be known from here on as "Mr. Obvious". But please allow me to correct you. the "Path To Citizenship" is only directed at the group known as "Illegal Aliens". Before any talk of what to do with the millions who are here illegally I don't recall any such phrase.

easy, Your Huffington Post link fails to mention Mr. Stiglitz advising President Obama for a short period that ended with criticism of the president. Here is what he had to say.

Stiglitz said that whoever designed the Obama administration's bank rescue plan is "either in the pocket of the banks or they’re incompetent."

He was equally critical of Obama's corporate bailouts.

In the Post link there is mention of Americans loss of 40% of there wealth between 2007 & 2010. Now if we think about the facts and the timeline it would appear to me this is directly related to real estate values and nothing more. Most Americans wealth is in their homes. Not in the bank. We never hear of Americans great gains in wealth when real estate values escalate for no logical reason. Example,,,, A house sold for $85,000 in Florida in 2000. The same house sold for $245,000 in 2005. Could someone please explain the reason for the price increase? Now the 2007-2010 situation has the same home priced back at the 2000 value and brilliant economists want us to believe Americans have lost 40% of their net worth? I think it has much more to do with politics than economics.

Wow I guess the Democrats are perfect through Clays eyes. What should we expect from a granny glasses bespectacled graduate of the University Of North Alabama. Oh and he had to make all those moves with his military Daddy creating a victimized toon artist with a biased, prejudice viewpoint. In many ways Clay Bennett is a racist.

As usual, MaxiMouse's comment brings nothing relevant to the table. Of course the Dems are not perfect but they are at least making obvious efforts to deal realistically with the problem of immigration; whereas the Repubs on the other hand are continuing to show how out of touch they are by concentrating most of their energy in hating and wanting to punish illegal aliens instead of trying to come up with a fair and reasonable solution.

Bennett is right on the money in this 'toon. Immigration will likely be the one issue that could be the complete undoing of the GOP. Hispanics/Latinos are the fastest growing minority group in the country and are expected to keep increasing at an exponential rate. If the Repubs had had any common sense at all they wouldn't have killed the Dream Act in the Senate like they did. It was a reasonable and constructive first step towards immigration reform but they are so full of bile and hatred towards anything and anyone outside the walls of their white towers of entitlement that they cannot bring themselves to give an inch. They just hunker down and continue to spew their words of hate, each of them patting themselves on the back for who can hate the most and the loudest.

Rounding up and deporting the illegal aliens will never happen. It would not only be impossible to carry out but also impractical. Yes, they are here illegally but we are every bit as complicit in their being here as they are. For years we have turned a blind eye and we have allowed employers to hire them. And most of the jobs they have taken are jobs that the vast majority of Americans are unwilling to do in the first place. So to whine about how they have stolen good jobs from American citizens is hogwash. Grow up and wise up, Repubs. Or, like blackwater said, you will soon be joining the ranks of the Mugwumps, Whigs, and Know-Nothings as you take your rightful place in history. Don't let the door hit you on your old, tired, spoiled, arrogant, fat white asses on your way out.

The neo-cons have been tip-toeing around that third rail for quite some time now. Employers provide the motivation for illegal aliens to come here and the incentive to stay here, but...Blessed are the "job creators". Just recite the mantra until your eyes glaze over and ignore the obvious. All the "job creators" ask for is the benefits of cheap labor with absolutely no culpability in the illegal immigration debate. Is that too much to ask?

Accountability is great in theory, but rather tricky in practice.

Was Milton filling out his NCAA basketball tournament bracket when he said that? I don't know this guy's citizenship status or if he receives government assistance, but if he can get open in the paint he should be able to grab some boards.
