Like the famous general with the same last name, rapper Antwan “Big Boi” Patton has a habit of returning.
As part of Outkast, Big Boi and partner Andre 3000 set the hip-hop world on its ear in 1994 with “Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik.” They did it again with “ATLiens” in 1996 and “Aquemini” in 1998.
In 2003, they released “Speakerboxxx/The Love Below,” which contained the mega-hit “Hey Ya!”
Together, they won six Grammy Awards.
As a solo artist, Big Boi dropped “Sir Lucious Leftfoot: The Son of Chico Dusty” in 2010 and “Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors” last year. He earned two Grammy nominations in 2010 for “Shutterbug” featuring Cutty and “Tightrope” with Janelle Monae, bringing his total nominations to 18.
He will perform Friday, May 31, at Track 29 along with Killer Mike, Fishhawk and Renegade on his Shoes for Running Tour, his first U.S. tour in more than two years. His set list, he told Rolling Stone, include classic Outkast jams and cuts from his solo albums. “It’s just nonstop action,” he said.
The name for his newest CD came from a family conversation, he told another interviewer.
“I borrowed the title from my grandmother who passed away,” he said. “She beat cancer twice, and the family said she needed to make a movie about her life. She said she would write a book instead and call it ‘Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors’ because she was going to tell it how it is. So, to me, the title is a search for the undisputed truth. We’re living in the information age with everything at your fingertips. But at same time, with social media you can take something and it will spread whether if it’s true or not.”
