Scenic City Clay Arts holding grand opening - Nov. 9

Scenic City Clay Arts will hold its grand opening Saturday, Nov. 9, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The studio, at 3202 Kellys Ferry Road, was created to bring artists together to sustain the art of clay through education and practice and at an affordable price.

SCCA was formerly the John A. Patten Pottery Studio, which was operated by the City of Chattanooga for 25 years and closed in July 2013. SCCA was organized in August 2013 to reopen the studio under a new name and operated without any city funding. Attendees both past and present donated money and time to keep the studio running.

Saturday's event will feature free clay so visitors can test their skills on either the pottery wheel or hand-building. A station will be set up for children to make a clay project.

The studio will also provide food and drink.

Works by some of the studio members will be available for sale, with a portion of sales being donated back to studio.

The studio regularly offers classes in wheel throwing and hand-building. It also offers workshops throughout the year and summer camps with children. It has 10 wheels, a slab roller and extruder and offers 20 glaze choices.
