No same-sex benefits? Councilman Larry Grohn introduces his own version of nondiscrimination bill

After weeks of speaking out against Councilman Chris Anderson's proposal to extend benefits to city employees in same-sex relationships and to update the city's nondiscrimination clause, Councilman Larry Grohn introduced his own bill.

Instead of making a motion to separate the two issues — benefits and the nondiscrimination clause — Grohn just introduced his own bill, which has nothing to do with employee benefits.

Grohn's bill would update the city code by protecting city employees from being fired for their sexual orientation and protect them from harassment in the workplace as Anderson's bill would

The difference, Grohn said, is that his bill stipulates the city has the right to expect employees to conduct themselves by their gender identity at the time they were hired.

That means a man who identifies himself as a woman, couldn't dress like a woman in the workplace or use the women's bathroom, Grohn said.

Both bills are on today's agenda and will be discussed at 3 p.m., before the council votes at their 6 p.m. meeting.
