Say no to chained CPI — and more letters to the editors

Say no to chained CPI

A flawed policy initiative called the “chained CPI” is gaining steam in Washington budget talks that would shortchange Tennesseans who receive federal benefits such as Social Security and federal annuities by low balling their annual cost-of-living adjustments (COLAs). Chained CPI supporters have tried to minimize the consequences it will have on seniors, retired federal employees, and veterans by calling it a “technical adjustment” or “better measure of inflation.”

When you cut through the rhetoric, the truth is that the chained CPI is only an adjustment in that it means smaller COLAs each year. It hurts every American — particularly our most vulnerable — in a major way that worsens over time.

Over 25 years, Chained CPI would rob a senior earning $15,000 in Social Security benefits of more than $23,000. Just think of how many coupons that senior would have to clip to make up for the loss over his/her retired years. Federal annuitants who don’t receive Social Security would see a loss of $48,000 over 25 years.

I urge Tennessee lawmakers to reject the Chained CPI and provide America’s seniors, retired veterans and public servants, and individuals with disabilities the income protection they have earned and deserve.

Obama’s race and popularity

Kudos to Maureen Dowd and her editorial in Tuesday’s Times Free Press (Aug. 27). She writes about Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (Mich.) and his attempt to impeach President Obama. He and many of his fellow God and tea party gang, and those who constantly write negatively about our president, need to come clean and say what they really want to say: that we dislike the President because he is black. Many blacks already realize this, and now a white woman states the obvious.

Stop hiding behind issues such as the economy, government spending and Obamacare as reasons to dislike him. At least the KKK lets you know where they are coming from, and I respect that. The economy will never get better regardless of who is in office. The government has and always will over spend. Obamacare may not be perfect, but I don’t see the GOP coming up with a better way to help Americans. Stop hiding behind issues that in all fairness the President cannot do much about because of the GOP-controlled Congress. Come out of the closet, and say what you really feel. No president has been criticized more in my lifetime as has President Obama. His only fault is presiding while black.

So, I take it Mr. Terrell's not a fan of MLK, Jr's plea to view the content of character rather than content of skin? I can't disagree with Obama because of his horrible policies economic policies ruining my future as a 24 year old? I can't disagree with Obama on his huge government spending? I can't disagree with Obama because my employer is now trying to decide whether to keep offering health care or dump me into Obamacare? I'm white. So, I guess I'm a racist according to the world of Mr. Terrell and those who blindly support Barack Obama.

It really is eye-opening.

SaraB, you poor, pathetic tool of the misinformed and uninformed. Your talking points come straight from the right-wing pundits. The previous administration drove us into the ditch with their unfunded wars and tax cuts for the precious top 1%. They drove college loans into the deep abyss. Under the current administration, we have gained millions of jobs, instead of losing 800,000 a month under GWB/The Dick and are well on our way out of the housing crisis. The stock market is at his highest level EVER. Get some real facts and don't get on here and show all your ignorance.

The facts are clear for those who aren't beholden to some political candidate or party. I'm going to so what I was taught: Proverbs 26:4 When arguing with fools, don't answer their foolish arguments, or you will become as foolish as they are.

When reason fails, throw out quotes from the Bible. See how well it worked for George W. Bush?

anniebelle, the left loves to talk about the 800,000 jobs per month as if it was multiple months. It was 800,000 ONE month and that is when there were 20,000,000 more people working than there is now. In addition, well over 50% of the new jobs in this "recovery" have been part time and/or temporary employment. Whenever you try to go to one of these large corporations today more and more you have to go through a temporary agency. Then most of those will NEVER be hired on full time. Insurance benefits are paid at a fraction of what they were then and because of Obamacare, the future of employer provided insurance is certainly in peril.

Who would have ever thought that Jan 2009 was the "good old days"? It was good compared to now and there is not one indicator that you can show that will prove otherwise other than the shedding of 800,000 jobs for that ONE month.

This job creation work of Obama placed multiple trillion dollar debts on us which has resulted in higher prices for people who make less than in 2008. Will the rich suffer? No, the poor and middle class who spend most of their money on gas and food. Liberals do not understand this: When the government spends money, that IS taxation.

TheKommander, I am a proud 'card carrying' member of the Reality Based Community. I know the facts about where we were in this country in 2009, going over the cliff, bailing out banksters, stealing mortgages from the poor and middle class, don't try your re-write of history, please, I'm on to your right-wing propaganda and always have been. My children's 401-K's and their pension accounts are finally about to recover after the Bush/Cheney cabal pulled their wall street scam on the uninformed and unknowing so they could stuff a few billion in their pockets, and gave HUGE tax cuts to the wealthiest 1% in the midst of two unfunded and unfounded wars (that's TAXATION on the poor and middle class )-- those are facts so deal with them.

No. It means that Lohr knows nothing about science and history outside his narrow fairy-tales about some Sky Daddy as reality.

It also means that my ancestors and yours were Africans. Or are you as limited in thought as Lohr?

DD, for what any of us know, our ancestors could have been green or purple people eaters. Neither of us knows what color we were thousands of years ago. We can only guess, unless a little birdie told you.

Didn't make it to science class, degage? Or was creationism taught instead of science?

But thanks for the laughs.

degage, all the evidence (fossil, genetic, etc) collected to date says that hominids originated in tropical africa, and because of the climate were most definitely dark. Not that any of this matters today: all humans are closely related to each other, with the specific feature differences attributed to small numbers of gene differences. Why we still quibble about race is purely for cultural, not biological reasons.

Ike, I am well aware that people evaluated. They have evaluated in just the last 100 years. What science has never come up with is the answer of what came first 'the chicken or the egg. If we evolved from an atom, where did the atom come from. I really don't care what color people were thousands of years ago. We are what we are and we can't change what we turned out to be, Black, white, yellow, or red. What I said earlier is we could have been any color even green.

DD, Glad you had a good laugh, we all need to lighten up a bit. life is to short.

I don't mind being evaluated. Happens all the time.

Seriously, we know quite a bit about how humans came about. But that detracts from the discussion at hand. But I stay with my original premise that racism is more about culture; the races different in only the tiniest ways. Would we see the day when we all see each other as people, rather than as stereotypes. I can hope, can't I?

So the extent of these comments is just binary answers? "Obama = bad" or "No like Obama = racist?" Chained CPI mean anything to anyone here? It will impact you long after the last president, this president or the next have retired to their library.
