A 48-year-old man died after he fell through the roof at a Shaw Industries plant in Dalton, Ga., Saturday morning, said Gary Baggett, deputy fire chief the Dalton Fire Department.

The roofing contractor fell between 30 and 35 feet, Baggett said. The man suffered a head injury but was conscious and alert when first responders arrived at 9:10 a.m. The crew immediately started treatment and called for a Life Force helicopter, but conditions were too foggy for the helicopter to fly.

The man was transported to Hamilton Medical Center by ambulance but died as the ambulance was arriving at the hospital, Baggett said.

He said the fire department did not note whether the man was wearing safety equipment. The man has not been identified.
