Who Golfs? Justin Egbert comfortable on course, on his Harley

Justin Egbert

LaFayette, Ga.

Justin Egbert stands out in a crowd of golfers.

His beard -- one that would make ZZ Top and the Duck Commanders tip their cap -- are the first clue. Jeans shorts and a short-sleeve button-down don't fit the dress code at most country clubs. And the tattoo ink on his arms and legs sets him apart from the sort who wear a golf shirt and pleated shorts to putt.

But he's a golfer. He loves the sport.

"I love the outdoors, the exercise; you get to meet people; you can play by yourself or with a group," Egbert said. "And you get to drink beer. That's a plus of this sport."

Egbert's image fits in better with his late-night occupation and other parts of his recreation. He's a bartender at the Terminal Brewhouse, and he rides a Harley-Davidson.

"I ride a Harley all year round, so when I'm off to play golf, I'm usually catching a ride," Egbert said after playing at Brainerd Golf Course. "I fit in more on a Harley than I do in a golf outfit."

Growing up in the Washington, D.C., area, he was introduced to the game by his father. Years later he became a regular at the Mahogany Run Golf Course on St. Thomas Island while working in the restaurant industry for 11 years.

"My dad was always pushing me into golf," Egbert said. "There was one course there. We did a restaurant league and Coors Light sponsored us, so I played that course once a week forever."

He's been back in the States for a couple of years now and plays a few times per month. He has just one wish to make his rounds a little more enjoyable: "If they let me have a two-wheeled Harley golf cart, I'd do it."
