6th Cavalry Museum continues Civil War series at Catoosa library - Feb. 15, 22

A reenactor portraying Capt. Stanley Howard of the Confederate Army of Tennessee will offer the next program in the 6th Calvary Museum's Civil War Lecture Series.

Jerry Trollinger's topic will be "Forward, Trot, Gallop, Charge: The Work of the Cavalryman and His Horse." The presentation, complete with a period uniform and authentic equipment, will start at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 8, in the Community Room of the Catoosa County Library, 108 Catoosa Circle, in Ringgold, Ga.

According to Trollinger, Howard served in the 10th Tennessee Cavalry, a unit under Nathan Bedford Forrest's command. Howard was severely wounded at the Battle of Chickamauga and sent home to Tennessee to recuperate.

Trollinger, a retiree who volunteers at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park, says he chose the cavalry as the source of his portrayal because "that was what my ancestors were involved with."

"I'm a hands-on person. I felt like I had more to offer that way, by letting people know what it was like for someone who was more or less an average soldier."

Admission is free. A copy of "The 6th United States Cavalry in the Civil War -- A History and Roster" will be given away as a door prize.

Still to come in the Saturday series are:

* Feb. 15: "Music, Morale and Memories of Home: Till Johnny Comes Marching Home, He'll Sing of Maryland, My Maryland and Home Sweet Home," by John Carruth, 8th Regiment Band.

* Feb. 22: "The 6th Cavalry Exploits of 1863 at the Battle of Brandy Station and History of the Medal of Honor," by Jim Wade and George Davenport, of the Medal of Honor Museum, and Chris McKeever, of the 6th Cavalry Museum.
