Three Cyclones teams win weekend events — and more Chattanooga region sports news

The Chattanooga Cyclones K baseball team won the Missississippi State Invitational this past weekend with two wins and a tie against the other three invited teams. The Cyclones won 11-1 over the Memphis Tigers with Alex Barbee getting the pitching win and reliever Corbin Brooksbank striking out all three batters he faced. Alex Tucker had two hits, scored a run and batted one in, and Cade Evans scored twice. Hunter Oliver had a run and an RBI in that game and an RBI hit in a 2-2 tie with the 18-under Southern Prospects, when Alex Darras had two Cyclones hits and pitcher Devin Lancaster gave up one earned run in six innings. Jackson Bell and four relievers pitched in a 10-1 defeat of Birmingham Baseball, when Darras and Caleb Collins each had two hits and an RBI and Evans had two runs and an RBI.

• The Chattanooga Cyclones SM team improved to 17-3 for the season with a 4-0 record this past weekend in the Southern Wood Bat Tennessee Tech Classic. Matty Henshaw was the winning pitcher in a 5-0 defeat of Team Rawlings, and Payne Anderson got the win in a 12-1 rout of the Southern Prospects. Hunter Mercer was the winner with relief from Logan Fugate in a 5-1 victory over Game Seven, and Blake Winstead was the winner with relief from Ricky Vaughn in a 9-1 defeat of the Georgia Eagles. Brody Binder, Mercer and Corey Edgemon were top hitters for the weekend.

• Using wood bats while their opponents were wielding metal, the Chattanooga Cyclones 14-under baseball team won the Gold Division of the Cleveland State Classic this past weekend. The Cyclones topped the Fury 4-2 with Alex Kerns earning the pitching win and Alex Woollums recording a save, and Dylan Perry pitched a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in an 11-1 defeat of the Tennessee Wolves. Perry then had the winning hit in an 8-7 semifinal win over the Chattanooga Baseball Club, Chase Bradford getting the win in relief, and Braden Jarvis was the winning pitcher in the 7-5 championship-game victory over Team Easton. Perry, Bradford, Andrew Brock, Jarvis and Josh Gibson were top hitters, and Gibson caught all four games and was stellar defensively as well.

Soccer

• The East Ridge Futbol Club 99 Arsenal won Pool C with a 3-0 record in the US Youth Soccer Region III Championships under-15 boys' division in Baton Rouge, La., but lost 3-2 to the Oklahoma state champions, OFC 99, in the quarterfinal round Monday. The region competition started with 198 boys' and girls' u-13 to u-19 teams from 12 state associations. The Tennessee champion Arsenal, coached by Chris Gibson, won 2-1 over GSA Force 99 White from South Texas, 2-0 over Charlotte United Gold from North Carolina and 1-0 over USC 99 Premier from Alabama. According to an ERFC release, that was the first time a Chattanooga-area team reached the quarterfinals of the top-level region tournament.

Fishing

• Walker Valley's Cole Sands and Caden Watson caught five fish weighing 12 pounds, 11 ounces Saturday on day two of the Bassmaster High School Open at Douglas Lake in Dandridge, Tenn., to finish in eighth place. Sands and Watson finished with a total haul of 23-2, one ounce out of seventh place and just over seven pounds behind tournament winners Jake Lee and Jacob Mashburn of Clinton High at 30-11. Another Walker Valley team, Jacob Foutz and Michael Tipton, were 13th with 20-5, and Bradley Central's Chris Wilson and Austin Vandergriff were 27th with 11-5.

Triathlon

• Spots are still open for the Chattanooga Waterfront Triathlon this Sunday morning, but entries will be cut off at 1,500. The cost is $150 per individual or $200 or $225 for a two- or three-person relay team for the 0.93-mile swim in the Tennessee River to Ross's Landing, a 42-kilometer bike ride out Highway 27 toward Soddy-Daisy and back and a 10k out-and-back run along the Tennessee Riverwalk. The race is part of the Best of the U.S. Amateur Championship Series. See www.chattanoogatrackclub.org.
