Meigs County Clerk and Master Tim Proffitt was arrested Tuesday on a grand jury indictment charging him with falsifying a hotel receipt.

After a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation probe, Proffitt, 52, turned himself in around 9:45 a.m. today at the Meigs County Jail in Decatur, Tenn., according to Meigs County Chief Deputy Brian Malone. Proffitt was released on a $1,000 bond, jail officials said.

Proffitt could not immediately be reached for comment and staff at the Clerk and Masters office said he had not been in today.

TBI officials say the investigation started Oct. 30 and discovered that Proffitt allegedly submitted the falsified receipt to the Meigs County Finance Department for reimbursement.

Proffitt on Tuesday still holds his post as the Clerk and Master of Chancery Court, a position appointed by the Ninth District Chancellor, TBI officials said.
