Howley doesn't walk the walk

Sometimes it's important to read up on a candidate to see if the candidate's past opinions match up with his campaign rhetoric. Here's a case in point -- Chris Howley, executive vice president of Republic Parking's airport division. During the recent Signal Mountain Town Council candidate forum held at the Mountain Arts Community Center, Mr. Howley stated that "government needs to get out of the way of business." Later he stated that "we need to do everything we can to minimize the morass of ordinances and details." However, in an article from the publication Airport Improvement Magazine (July/August 2012 edition), Mr. Howley discusses independent off-site parking lots. These are lots that compete with Republic. The article states that "many airports benefit from regulations or ordinances that allow them to collect an access fee from off-airport parking operators." Mr. Howley's quote is, "Making sure you have these regulations in place is one way to help limit these firms from entering the market, because it ups their operational costs." Sounds like he's all in favor of regulations if they benefit Republic Parking. It makes you think, doesn't it?

Eastgate Library now 'book stall'

I suggest a trip to the Eastgate Library. In times past, my children have done much research for school reports, etc. We have done genealogy research there and spent many hours reading about the history, etc., of Tennessee. The library now looks like a book stall at a flea market. There are no books pertaining to history and genealogy, nor good reading materials. There is nothing there to read. When I asked what happened, the staff said they got rid of the books. That is, the new director, Corrine Hall, got rid of them. What landfill did they get dumped in?

Adoptee supports Amendment 1

I support Amendment 1 because it protects the lives of millions of innocent, unborn babies. I sympathize with women who have been victims of rape, but an unborn child should not be murdered because of this. That child can be put up for adoption. I personally like this, because I am an adopted child. There are so many people who would love and care for these children. Although these children are born through an act of evil, that does not make them worthless or a "mass of tissue." Society talks about ending child abuse and protecting the innocence of children, yet they will stand by and let millions of innocent children be murdered. This is wrong. I encourage everyone to vote for Vote 1.

Vote for Roberts, Pope, LeCompte

As 50-year residents of Red Bank District 3, we are concerned about the upcoming election. Two incumbents running for commissioner are the same two who refused to appoint a commissioner for District 3 when a vacancy occurred. District 3 has been without representation since February. Rick Causer and Floy Pierce refused to vote to appoint three different citizens who were nominated repeatedly by Mayor John Roberts and Commissioner Eddie Pierce. After several commission meetings which we attended, it was clear that Causer and Floy Pierce were unwilling to cast their vote for any person nominated to fill the seat, and each is well qualified. One nominee stated publicly she would serve as a caretaker for the seat until the election, but Causer and Pierce refused to appoint. Our votes will go for John Roberts, Terry Pope and Ed LeCompte to represent all citizens of Red Bank.
