Steve Robison has stepped down as McCallie School's varsity basketball coach after just two seasons in that role.

Robison, who had been a Blue Tornado assistant for the four years prior to taking over the program, announced his decision to the players Monday afternoon.

"I am truly grateful for the opportunity that I have had to coach and teach at McCallie over the last six years," Robison said in a press release. "I am excited for the future of the basketball program, but I just know that it is the right time for me to retire from coaching."

Robison guided the Blue Tornado to a 9-16 record in 2022-23 and a 17-8 mark this past season that included winning the Times Free Press Best of Preps tournament in December.

"I am grateful for Coach Robison and his leadership and service," McCallie Head of School Lee Burns said. "He is a man of great character who led our basketball program well."

Robison, a native of Philadelphia, first came to Chattanooga in 1997 on a basketball grant-in-aid at Tennessee Temple University. He was a three-time first-team All-American there, scoring more than 2,400 points, and he still holds the single-season scoring record of 930 points.

In March 2022, less than two weeks after David Conrady stepped down as Blue Tornado head coach, Robison was elevated from his assistant role. He previously served as the head coach of Berean Academy from 2010-17, winning two state championships, and also has coached two AAU basketball teams.

"Personally, I wish Steve could have remained in this role, but I respect his thoughtful approach to this decision and truly wish him the very best," said McCallie athletic director Kenny Sholl. "We look forward to finding an outstanding person to lead the basketball program."

McCallie administrators said the process to begin finding its new basketball coach will begin immediately.
