Maintenance worker hit by heavy machine killed in Gordon County

A maintenance worker was killed after a heavy machine hit his head at an industrial plant in Gordon County on Sunday.

Shin Gyun Kim, of Rossville, was airlifted to Erlanger hospital, but died several hours later, said Gordon County Deputy Coroner Bo Nicholson.

When Kim was replacing a hydraulic cylinder at L.G. Chemicals Industrial Materials Co., the machine swung around and struck him in the head, Nicholson said.

Several workers in the room saw the accident at about 10:30 a.m. and immediately called 911, he said. Firefighters and paramedics had to carry him from the site, but he died from his head injuries around 1:20 p.m., Nicholson said.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration agents investigate after an industrial death to see if any safety policies were breached.

L.G. Chemicals officials didn't immediately return calls seeking comment.
