Alabama coroner, funeral home director indicted

WETUMPKA, Ala. - Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange has announced that a county coroner and a funeral home director accused of violating ethics laws have been arrested.

Strange said Monday that an 11-count grand jury indictment charges Elmore County Coroner Timothy Ellison with theft of property by deception and unauthorized control, and using his office for personal gain.

Ellison is accused of improperly handling checks that were issued to the cities of Millbrook, Tallassee, Wetumpka, the Elmore County Commission and the State of Alabama.

Yancey Joe Mitchell III is accused of making false statements and aiding and abetting Ellison.

Strange didn't offer additional details about the investigation that led to the Elmore County grand jury indictment.

It's unclear if Mitchell and Ellison have attorneys.
