Abortion, or just murder?

It is no secret that Americans are sharply divided on whether abortion should be legal. Of course, until the Supreme Court's horrible 1973 Roe v. Wade decision imposed abortion "rights" nationwide, abortion was appropriately and constitutionally a matter left to the states.

But wherever you stand on the issue, a gruesome case in Philadelphia highlights the declining respect in our nation for innocent life.

Recently, two workers at an abortion clinic in Philadelphia pleaded guilty to third-degree murder.

Pardon the graphic nature of the details, but one of the workers said she was involved in the stabbing death of an infant who had been delivered in a toilet! The other worker who pleaded guilty was involved in the death of a woman who received an overdose of painkillers.

All told, 10 people - including the man who ran the clinic - have been charged in connection with the horrifying case. Authorities say seven babies were born alive at the clinic before being killed with scissors.

It is hard to fathom the mentality that would allow a person to participate in such an appalling act against a defenseless infant.

But abortion has tragically cheapened respect for life in our country.

Unborn babies are paying the highest price for that, but we all pay a price as our humanity and our willingness to protect the least among us are diminished, bit by bit.
