Area sports notes: Volleyball Mocs beat Furman 3-0

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga volleyball team improved to 2-0 in Southern Conference play with a 3-0 home win Saturday against Furman. It was the 100th career win for Mocs coach Travis Filar. The set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 25-23. Ally Ford, Mikaela Gauthreaux and Dani Szczepanski each registered 10 kills and Gylian Finch had seven for UTC (6-9), and Jaquelyn Langhaim had 32 assists, four aces and 10 digs. Megan Kaufman added 12 digs.

* Lee University lost for the first time in Gulf South Conference competition this season 3-0 at Montevallo (14-1, 5-0) on Saturday. The set scores were 25-15, 25-17, 25-21. Bailey Kress had nine kills, Silvia Sartori eight kills and 11 digs, Hanna Matthews 17 assists and MaKayla Beebe 14 digs for Lee (6-9, 4-1).

* Lauren Dwyer had 18 kills and 14 digs as Hendrix won 3-2 (20-25, 25-23, 25-12, 21-25, 16-14) at Sewanee and rose to 11-4, 4-0 in the Southern Athletic Association. For the Tigers (11-3, 2-2), Destiny Stewart had 18 kills and 13 digs, Sydney White 14 kills and 11 digs, Ellie Pedersen 11 kills on .455 hitting, Constance Connolly 43 assists and Lilly Reilly 20 digs and three aces.

* Covenant College won two USA South matches at home Saturday, 3-2 (24-26, 25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 15-8) over LaGrange and 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-18) over Piedmont. Sophie Puertas had 47 assists and 14 digs and Hannah Stewart had 28 digs for the Lady Scots (5-8, 3-0) against LaGrange. In the same match, Hannah Harris and Alexa Spurling downed 16 and 13 kills, Sara Delk had 15 digs with eight kills, Emily Moore also had 15 digs and Leah Buys served six aces. Puertas had 36 assists and 13 digs against Piedmont, while Allie Jakes had 11 kills, Delk eight kills and 11 digs, Lindsey Stephens eight kills, Stewart 13 digs and Buys and Moore 12 digs each.

* Tennessee Wesleyan is 5-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference after winning 3-1 (19-25, 25-14, 25-18, 25-14) Friday at Columbia College and 3-0 (25-11, 25-14, 25-15) Saturday at Allen University, also in Columbia, South Carolina. The Lady Bulldogs' seventh win in eight matches got them to 9-9 overall.

* Anna Owens had 16 kills as Bryan College won 3-1 (25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 25-20) in an AAC match Friday at Allen University. Jennifer Keck had 16 assists and Emalie Hicks and Paige Randolph had eight and seven kills for the Lady Lions (5-9, 2-4), who played Saturday at Columbia College and against Piedmont International.

* Former Ridgeland High School standout Te'a Owens has recovered from two concussions sustained in summer workouts and early in the season and helped Point University climb to 6-0 in the AAC and 12-7 overall with a 3-2 win Friday at Milligan and a 3-1 victory Saturday at Montreat. Owens had nine kills and 11 digs Friday and five kills and four block assists Saturday.

Soccer

* Bryan College swept visiting Columbia International in an AAC doubleheader Saturday, 6-0 in the men's game and 2-1 in the women's. Jonathan Ricketts had three goals and an assist, and Charlie Clarke and Haaris Hussain each had a goal and multiple assists for the Lions (3-3-2, 1-1-1). Brad Spooner also scored, and Artur Dombrowski matched Clarke with three assists. For the Lady Lions (3-6, 2-2), Makena Giles scored from an Ana Ramirez assist in the fourth minute and Xena Jesurum netted a rebound shot in the 69th.

* Greensboro College won 2-1 in USA South men's play Saturday at Covenant, but the Covenant women won 3-0 at Agnes Scott with second-half goals from Addy Cronan, Kyra Duble (from a Hannah Rodehaver pass) and Kailey Burrell. The Lady Scots are 2-4-1, 1-0. Anthony Buzzeo scored in defeat for the Scots (6-3-1, 3-1-1).

* The local Premier Soccer Academy's under-19 boys team, Premier River Plate, won its division last weekend at the Battleground Tournament of Champions in Franklin, Tennessee. River Plate followed a 3-3 draw Saturday with Sunday wins of 2-1 and 1-0 against Tennessee TSC 2000 Showcase White and Huntsville FC 00 Blue. "They played very well throughout all the tournament - good attacking soccer and displaying superb skills and fitness," PSA coach Pedro Kozak said of his players.

Field hockey

* Ceara Caffrey scored four goals as Sewanee beat Converse 8-2 Saturday in field hockey. She has 13 in six games. Also scoring for the Tigers (5-1) were Elisabeth Domittner, Buckley Norman, Violet Hoagland and Milly Etheridge, and Etheridge, Jo Jo Young, Hannah Tompkins and Eliza Griffin each had an assist.

Golf

* The UTC women's team was tied for 13th out of 15 schools at 299 after Friday's first round in the Mason Rudolph Championships at the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin. The Mocs slipped to 14th at 599 in Saturday morning's round but were 13th again when play was suspended with the UTC players having completed nine to 12 holes in the afternoon 18. UTC's Monica San Juan shot a 2-under-par 70 Friday and was tied for 13th individually in the loaded field, and she was at par for the tournament with seven holes to play. That had her tied for 14th. Maddy McDanel, who opened with a 73, was 3 over with eight to play, and Rheagan Hall and Esme Hamilton were 10 over and 13 over with nine and six holes left. Vanderbilt was at 559 through 36 holes, 12 ahead of second-place Arizona State, and six shots separated the third- and ninth-place teams. Similarly, UTC was only four back of 10th.
