Hixson cyclist second in U.S. masters race

MADISON, Wis. -- Scenic City Velo cyclist Kimberly Flynn Faszcewski of Hixson gave the winner a fight to the finish in the women's masters 40-44 age group Thursday in the U.S. Cyclo-cross National Championships at Badger Prairie Park. Firefighter Linda Sone of Northfield, Minn., won the four-lap race on the rolling 2.1-mile course in 46 minutes, 10 seconds. Faszceski took the silver medal in 46:30, more than a minute and a half ahead of the third-place finisher from Delaware. The USA Cycling race report described the top two as "duking it out" with the lead flip-flopping several times before Sone took control in the sand and mud sections on the final lap. Faszcewski also represents USSC Trek p/b Vantaggio.

Golf

• ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- University of Tennessee at Chattanooga senior golfer Stephan Jaeger, a Baylor School graduate who is ranked No. 8 in the nation by GolfWeek, shot a 3-under-par 69 and is tied for third in the New Year's Invitational at St. Petersburg Country Club. The NYI is the longest running annual invitational in the country. Ben Klaus and Tae Wan Lee share the lead at 4 under.

Basketball

• BRISTOL, Va. -- The Bryan College men's basketball team outlasted Virginia Intermont 89-86 in an Appalachian Athletic Conference game Thursday night, but the Bryan women lost their fourth game in a row, 63-59. Teonika Webb had 18 points for the Intermont women (10-6, 3-1), who scored the last five. Anna Thomas had 22 for Bryan (10-5, 1-3) and Sarah Newton and Sara Barnett scored 10 each. Tim Fortenberry scored 20 points with 6-of-9 3-point shooting for the Lions (6-11, 1-2), who got 19 points from Rob Riley, 17 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals from reinstated starting point guard Dion Fair, 13 points and five assists from Lavonte Henderson and eight rebounds each from Jared Allen and Carrin Nash. Jimmie Ross led the hosts with 24 points, and Daniel Ross had 17 points and four steals. In another AAC doubleheader in Virginia, Bluefield beat the Tennessee Wesleyan women 83-77 and defeated the Wesleyan men 100-84.
