Alcus Whitehead

Alcus P. Whitehead, 91, of Chattanooga, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2011, in Chattanooga. He was born Jan. 1, 1920, in Laurel Hill, Mississippi the son of the late Horace and Cuba Cooper Whitehead and was also preceded in death by his brothers, Randall and Alwyn Whitehead. Mr. Whitehead achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and built the Whitehead Scout House in Houston, Texas. Prior to graduating high school he was in the Civilian Conservation Corp and served in the US Army during World War II. Mr. Whitehead was a graduate of the University of Texas Business School with a degree in accounting. He worked as Manager for Tax Exempt Organizations for the IRS. He was a member of the Alhambra Temple of the Shrine.Survivors include his wife, Mae Whitehead; son, Phillip Whitehead, of Houston; stepson, Preston (Dr. Deborah DiSefano) Millet, of Chattanooga; grandchildren. Chandi Millet Plummer. of Louisville, Ky., and James Preston Millet, of Chattanooga; great-grandchildren, Sarah Beth Plummer, Chloe Plummer and Anna Belle Plummer, all of Louisville, Ky.Funeral services will be held Tuesday Feb. 1, 2011, at 11 a.m. from the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home with Dr. Robert Plummer officiating. Interment will follow in the Chattanooga National Cemetery.The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1011 Tuesday morning.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Helene DiStefano Fund 8155 E.
