Mary Townsend

WILDWOOD Mary C. Townsend, 99, died Monday Nov. 19, 2012.She was born in Chattanooga. She graduated from Chattanooga-Central High School class of 1931 and then moved to Wildwood, Ga., in 1932. She married Raymond Townsend in 1934 and ran Townsend General Store until closing in 1961. She was a member of the Red Cross Gray Ladies who served Hutchison Hospital after it opened. She was president of American Legion Auxiliary Post #106 Trenton, GA and same office for Post #107 in New Plymouth, Idaho. She retired as Postmaster from Wildwood office in 1966. Past Matron of St. Elmo Chapter 242, Order of Eastern Star. Member of the Wildwood United Methodist church since 1934. Member of Trenton-Dade Optimist Club for 15 years where she served two terms as president (1997-98) and (1998-99), making Honor Club both years.She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond S. Townsend; son, Patrick D. (Pat) Townsend; parents, James H. and Carrie Cooley; sisters, Lolita Allen and brother John Edward Cooley.Surviving are two sons, William M. "Bill" Townsend and Raymond S. "Stoney" Townsend, both of Wildwood, Ga.; five grandchildren, Denise Bice, of Chattanooga, Dixie Leigh Blocker, of Maryville, Tenn., Melissa Kelley, of Simpsonville, S.C., Rebecca Johnson, of Hixson, Don Townsend, of Wildwood, Ga.; three great-grandchildren, Gabriel Blocker, Sarah Kelley, Aaron Johnson; also several nieces and nephews.Visit www.RyanFuneralHome.net to share memories and condolences.Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2012, in the chapel with Rev.
