Joseph Stewart

Joseph Winthrop Stewart, 87, formerly of Chattanooga, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Banner Hospice House in Peoria, Ariz.He was a native of Tennessee, having grown up in Chattanooga. While he lived most of his life in Atlanta, Mr. Stewart had been living in Phoenix, Ariz., for the past 22 years. He was the son of the late James Polk Stewart and Claudia Watson Stewart.Stewart was a graduate of Central High School. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had a successful career flying for Eastern Airlines for thirty years. After retiring, Captain Stewart was a member of the American Legion Ahwatukee Chapter and Retired Eastern Pilots Association.The survivors include his wife, Carolyn Dixon Stewart, of Phoenix, Ariz.; a daughter, Ceresa Lynn Stewart, of Chandler, Ariz.; a son, Joseph Winthrop Stewart II (Jay) and his wife Glenda Terry Stewart, of Phoenix, Ariz; two grandchildren, Brittany Michelle Stewart and Joseph Winthrop Stewart III.A grave side funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 23, at Greenwood Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN.Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, North Chapel.
