Gladys Hines

Gladys LaMyrtle Spence Hines passed away in Detroit, Mich., on Monday, June 10, 2013, at a local health care facility.She was born to John and Maggie Brown Spence on Dec. 19, 1929. She was the last of 11 children who, along with her parents, preceded her in death. She was married to beloved husband, Moses Hines of Mobile, Ala., who preceded her in death in 1988.As a young girl, Gladys attended Wiley Memorial Methodist Church with her immediate family until her marriage to Moses Hines and subsequent move to Detroit, Mich. Though there were no children born to their union, they embraced their nieces and nephews with much love and concern.When she became ill, her nieces surrounded her to care for her, to attend to her, to carry out her wishes. Their last act was to return her remains to where her life began - Chattanooga. Her last wish and desire was to be laid to rest with her sisters and brothers - the family she loved since birth - the family with whom she will spend eternity. In their youth, the five Spence girls were known to be quite beautiful in the south Chattanooga area. To quote one of the nieces, "Gladys' demise marks the end of a dynasty - the last of the beautiful Spence girls."She leaves to treasure her memory; nieces, Faye "Kitty" Ford, Scottsdale, Ariz.; Barbara Barrow, Detroit, Mich.; Clara S. Moore, Brookfield, Wis.; Dorothy Edwards, Olympia Fields, Ill., and Robbie Jones, Simsbury, Conn.; grandnephew, Jerrod Barrow, Detroit, Mich. Gladys also leaves several other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews in Texas, Illinois, Wisconsin, Hawaii and Chattanooga; additionally, she leaves a host of relatives, friends and acquaintances.Graveside service for Gladys Hines will be at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 17, in Forest Hill Cemetery.The family will assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m.The body will lie in state for public viewing today from noon-6 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave. 622-9995.
