David Johnston

David C. Johnston, 77, passed away Wednesday Oct. 2, 2013, in his home, surrounded by family.Born and raised in Chattanooga to W.D. "Bill" and Louise Susong Johnston, he graduated from Chattanooga High School and served in the Naval Reserve. He was a longtime resident of Brainerd Hills Neighborhood. David was a certified Volkswagon mechanic at Southland Volkswagon, co-owner of Johnston-Sipe Service for Volkswagon, member of Scenic City Volks Folks, former member of TAG Antique Engine Club and Sports Car Club of America. After retiring, he took up woodworking and restoration, and was an avid model builder. David loved reading Clive Cussler books, Civil War relic hunting, exploring new places and being at the beach. He was a history buff and a great friend to all animals (he was a "Saint Francis"). An amazing bluegrass musician, he played in numerous bands including The Lonesome Travelers and Compass Rose; and recorded several albums including 12 Shades of Bluegrass.David was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, W.D. "Billy" Johnston Jr.Survived by his wife, Linda Johnston; children, John David Carroll (Jay) Johnston, Julia Suzanne Louise Johnston and Kris Meadows (Owen Limbach), and his Dar dog.A memorial service will be held at a later date.Visit www.heritagefh.com to share words of comfort to the family.There will be no visitation at the funeral home.Arrangements are by Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Road.
