John Lee

John Luther Lee III, 48, of Ooltewah, passed peacefully at a local Hospice facility on Sunday morning, Oct. 20, 2013. after a long battle with cancer.He was born May 17, 1965, in Memphis. At the time of his death, he was surrounded by members of his family.John was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Whittenburg Lee and John Luther Lee II.He is survived by his wife, Shawn Kurrelmeier-Lee; stepchildren, Kristin (Chris) Kelsay Belcher and Mak Kelsay; uncle Donald and aunt Joan Whittenburg, Ray and Ann Eslinger, and their children, Mark and Kay Whittenburg and their children, Joan (half sister) and Nick Waber; uncle Wiley and aunt Mary Gross and many other extended loving family members.A retired Hamilton County assistant district attorney, John loved his job and his friendship with his colleagues. John was a law enforcement advocate and loved the practice of law. He served as an instructor for the Chattanooga Police Academy for many years and for the Tennessee District Attorneys Conferences. He graduated from East Ridge High School in 1983. John received his undergraduate degree from The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and his law degree from The University of Tennessee School of Law.John participated as a community volunteer serving as a board member of The Boys and Girls Club of Chattanooga and The Alzheimers Association. He was an active member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church since 1991.In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial gifts in Johns name may be shared through the American Cancer Society and/or the Julie Jacks Memorial Scholarship Fund of Chattanooga.A visitation with family and friends will be from 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 2, at St Pauls Episcopal Church.
